As founders and innovators, challenging established norms is part of our DNA. That’s why we invited our members to join us for an OPUS Oracles that promised to fuel the debate on sports, ethics, and the future of competition, just before the Olympic torch ignites spirits worldwide! Our Chair Sam Tidswell-Norrish was joined by Aron D'Souza, the revolutionary thinker and the mastermind behind Enhanced Games, the ground-breaking competition where the limits of human performance are redefined. Enhanced, often dubbed 'the Olympics of the Future,' is shattering the status quo by allowing athletes to harness the full potential of performance-enhancing drugs, science and technology. We had a global audience with members from the UAE and UK both joining the event, including entrepreneurs from sport, consumer businesses, health and beyond. Thank you to WeWork for hosting us and Aron for sharing your invaluable insights. Here are our key takeaways: 💡 Mission-Driven Motivation Having a compelling and deep mission is crucial for enduring the challenges of building a company. It should motivate not just the founders but also every employee, driving them to achieve excellence even in difficult times. 💡 Overcoming Resistance and Disruption Disruptive ventures often face criticism from incumbents. Success requires not only innovative ideas but also effective marketing and cultural change to shift public perception and gain acceptance. 💡 High-Performance Organisational Culture Creating a strong organisational culture where everyone understands the mission and key performance indicators (KPIs) is essential. Efficient project management and communication systems are crucial for maintaining operational excellence. 💡 Technological and Economic Leadership Embracing technological advancements and positioning a venture at the forefront of innovation can drive significant economic opportunities. Supporting and hosting cutting-edge initiatives can make a country or organisation a leader in new, high-growth industries. #OPUSOracles #opportunity #community #entrepreneurship #innovation

I’m feeling super inspired by the conversations we had yesterday at our latest edition of Club Dinner (this time at Der Teufelhof Basel AG in Switzerland 🍽️). A lot of fruitful and eye-opening discussions with people working in innovation, ventures, corporate development and corporate strategy at leading corporations. Sharing with you the 10 key takeaways I left the dinner with: 1. Corporations manage different time horizons (short term, medium term, long term), which means they do market intelligence according to these horizons ⏱️ 2. Culture is paramount when creating an innovation environment. It helps you scale your innovation (or ventures or corp dev) teams as the organization grows, keeping teams aligned during global expansion. Novo Nordisk was mentioned as a success case in creating global innovation teams glued by a shared culture ✌️ 3. Cultural innovation has to be embedded across teams, especially when boards and executive committees are more traditional. Success relies on: (1) innovation aligning with strategic goals, (2) working with BUs to solve their problems, (3) starting small and highlighting wins as they happen, (4) understanding the devastating effect of not keeping up with innovation (a quote from last night; "all boards and execs know that 'nobody wants to be the next Kodak or Nokia'") 💡 4. Strategic fit between the corporation and the startup is crucial. This sparked a beautiful definition by one of our attendees: "Strategic fit = alignment with the corporation’s business + alignment in terms of mentality + alignment in terms of relationship / personalities" 🤝 5. The world is changing SO fast. As one executive highlighted, “our customers today won’t be our customers in 10 years”. We need to adapt quickly. Market intelligence about upcoming spaces and topics is crucial not to fall behind ⏩ 6. AI is the new Cloud—despite some initial resistance, it will happen. When Cloud emerged, people were reluctant to put their data in the cloud. Now everyone does it. Same with AI. Knowing it'll happen and embracing it early gives you a competitive edge ☁️ 7. A hybrid approach to market landscaping / scouting of potential solutions is essential; i.e. combining AI (e.g. FounderNest) and personal networks. AI gives scale, accuracy and relevance. Personal networks give qualitative feedback from people who are on the ground 🕸️ 8. Having a (competitive) corporation as a minority shareholder is not a red flag to other corporations to partner up with that startup 🟩 9. There is more collaboration among competitive corporations than we think. We largely discussed the case of pharma. As one of the attendees highlighted, “pharma companies compete against time, not against each other” 💊 10. 2024 seems to be having a bit of a recovery from 2023 although it’s still slow 📈

For decades, the #business and #corporate world has been sold on three ideas: One, we should analyse what is, to shape our view of what could be. Two, more than ever today, and even more so in the future, #technologyinnovation is the key to market #creation and #growth. And three, at the heart of innovation is the lone, smart, and gut-instinct entrepreneur. Reasonable? Absolutely. Except those are not the right perspectives to lead with to generate innovation and growth. Should you consider them? Yes — and act on them too. But you can think of them as the cart, not the horse. And the horse needs to come first. We have found that people who generate new markets where none existed before lead with certain perspectives and psychological states that differ in many ways from those long-accepted pillars. While these perspectives are applicable to growth and innovation in general, they are particularly relevant in allowing corporate leaders to expand their opportunity horizon beyond disruption to what we have come to think of as nondisruptive creation. Nondisruptive creation is when you create a new market without needing to tear down or displace others or your own business. There are no failed companies, lost jobs, or destroyed markets in its wake, opening a path to innovation where business and society can better thrive together. As our research shows, it offers the immense potential to innovate new markets where none existed before. Think of the billion-dollar industry the Square credit card reader unlocked, for example. Microfinance, cell phone accessories, men’s cosmeceuticals, e-sports, life coaching, and the $500 million-dollar pet Halloween costume industry are all prime examples of nondisruptive new markets in action. #executivedirectors #culturetransformation #innovation #ceos #ceo #strategytoexecution #nonexecutivedirectors #commmunications #trustbasedleadership #boardofdirectors #valuersbasedleadership #employeeengagement #ceo #businessresilence #opportunities #trust #research #businessgrowth #modelling #people #values #leadership #thoughtleaders #thoughtleadership
