The biopharma and pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is a significant user of energy; principally this is associated with HVAC / cleanroom controls, and the generation of critical and trade utilities e.g. hot water for injection and pure steam. However, the healthcare industry is not immune from the pressures of addressing the need to reduce energy usage and carbon output, and the move to promote greater sustainability. Due to the focus on regulatory compliance, this has always been a difficult circle to square for the industry. The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Biochemical Engineering Special Interest Group (BESIG) conference ‘Biopharma Facilities for a Sustainable Future’ showcased what can be done to improve our performance with strategies for introducing dynamic cleanroom controls to help address HVAC demands, widening of the use of single-use technologies which remove the need for energy-intensive Clean in Place (CIP) and Sterilisation in Place, the generation of cold WFI rather than hot, and the recycling of single-use plastics. There was a clear acknowledgement by the speakers and the attendees that our sector needs to embrace change and solutions, led by science, that need to address genuine regulatory concerns but the message was clear we need to move forward as an industry at pace. Two of our colleagues, Adrian Jones, UK Design & Engineering ‑ Northern Region Manager, and Nadira Adjali, Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer, attended to join discussions and share how Scitech is supporting sustainable design practices and providing innovative solutions to our clients. Adrian said: "The event was really well attended with some excellent presentations. There was a real buzz in the room and a sense that pharma companies are really committed to addressing meaningful carbon reduction and sustainability improvements." Nadira added: "Achieving Net Zero Carbon is a long-term commitment that requires dedication and collaboration. It was reassuring to see that everyone was on the same page, emphasising our own thoughts and solidifying our path forward within Scitech sustainability group. It is crucial to stay updated on evolving technologies and best practices applied to biopharma." #NetZeroCarbon #Sustainability #Biopharma #HVAC #PharmaceuticalManufacturing #Cleanrooms #ScitechEngineering
