Thinking of growing controlled environment (CEA) specialty crops? Serge Boon founder of Boon Greenhouse Consultancy, said regardless of the crop, a greenhouse or vertical farm grower has to determine if there is a sustainable market for the crop. “I have seen growers who have started very small and have developed a market and want to expand their production facilities to produce more crops,” Boon said. “They want to increase the volume of the crops they are growing. By increasing the size of the operation, production efficiencies should also increase. “Unfortunately, there are still some growers who think they can produce a specialty crop and easily sell it. One concern we heard loud and clear at the National Organic Standards Board meeting was for ongoing market development, especially for rotation crops and as more farms transition to organic. As part of the Transition to Organic Partnership Program, the Organic Trade Association and the Rodale Institute, are working on programs to connect buyers and sellers. They are surveying buyers in order to develop better tools for finding newly certified organic suppliers and those in transition to organic production. Congratulations to David Hula on another corn yield world record! In the regenerative ag space talking about yield has become a taboo topic. In certain meetings it generates weird looks or comments along the lines of, there is more to farming than yield. While it is important to recognize that yield isn't everything it is important for at least two reasons. First, without some yield a farm won't be a farm as it won't have a product to sell. Second, the main purpose of farming is to feed people and animals, without sufficient yield there won't be enough crop to do that. You may be wondering what the point is that I'm trying to get across. It's simply this, that as farmers and agronomists it's important to learn not only from others who farm in a similar manner as us but also those who farm in a drastically different manner. While the specific practices may differ there are basic principles that will be successful on any farm. Here are a couple of principles that I've gathered from David Hula. 1. Know your crops and know your fields. David was quoted in the article saying, "I'm constantly walking these fields and watching for potential." 2. Be dedicated. "My hobby is corn. The only thing I don't enjoy is harvesting a bad crop." While we need to be cognizant of family, church, and community obligations in our lives there is a level of dedication, or for some, obsession that must be available to truly reach the potential a farm has to offer. As we go into 2024 I'd challenge you to think about ways to improve how you scout fields and utilize that data. https://lnkd.in/eBvzJPBj
