Employment Outlook 2024: More than 25% of existing jobs will be strongly affected by net-zero policies, in both positive and negative ways, and across most sectors of the economy. Latest Analysis Shows: ▪️ Employment and unemployment are at historic levels. ▪️ Real wages are growing, but remain below 2019 levels. ▪️The net-zero transition will have a profound impact on labour markets.

The Economist this week has a lovely write-up on the impact of AI and automation. But their take feels significantly more positive than some of the academic articles they reference, notably that by Acemoglu & Restrepo. The key question is whether the productivity benefits will accrue to the economy as a whole (as the article argues) or to the individual firms (closer to Acemoglu & Restrepo, and feels more intuitive to us). https://lnkd.in/eAW9NWzh

ONS figures show a slow down in the labour market which typically lags behind the economy and therefore the conclusion that this is linked to the winter recession. However, others might argue that his is a longer term issue that links to uncertainty (political/economically) and the cost burden of doing business right now, amongst other things. Worrying evidence that green jobs may not be as well paid or have such good employment conditions as high emissions jobs! Climate experts and activists really need to understand the impact on working people and fight for a socially #JustTransition with #CollectiveBargaining and #FairPay. OECD - OCDE points out that #CarbonPricing is regressive and suggests giving some of the profits back to vulnerable households. That might be some #ClimateJustice. Workers moving from high emission to green industries have ended up with lower wages and poorer job opportunities! The significant growth in profits over the past 2-3 years provides room for further wage increases. Says the @OECD's 2024 Employment Outlook. With a special focus on green jobs, the OECD's annual jobs report, rightly makes a strong case for collective bargaining to achieve a socially #JustTransition to a net-zero economy.  It also says that #CarbonPricing is regressive and argues for 'channeling part of this revenue back to affected households' to cushion what OECD calls 'distributional outcomes' (=inequality).
