The XY-1A Core Sampling Drill is a drilling equipment primarily used for geological exploration and geotechnical engineering purposes. Drilling straight holes – what can go wrong? A lot of things! 👷♂️ Just as in the case with the hammer lifetime, there are several factors that determines the straightness of any borehole: ·      Geology ·      Drilling parameters ·      BHA (Bottom Hole Assembly) ·      Skill of the driller In the same geology, a LKAB Wassara AB water-powered DTH hammer will drill straighter holes than Air DTH or Top hammer, but core drilling will be straighter. As an example, look at the figure below which is a plot of the hole deviation with Air DTH (35 bar) in yellow and Wassara water-powered DTH in blue from a real UrbanGeo-drilling project in Stockholm, Sweden 🏢🏢🏢 The holes were drilled next to each other in the same geology which was fractured rock. Announcing Newly Published MAB-11 The Municipal Advisory Board is pleased to announce the publishing of MAB-11, MAB Model Specifications for Installation of PE4710 Water Service, Distribution, and Transmission Pipes by Horizontal Directional Drilling. This publication covers the installation of large diameter (24 in. or greater) horizontal directional drilling (HDD), sometimes referred to as “maxi-HDD,” which is capable of drilling holes of up to 10,000 ft in length, and placing pipes of up to 60-in. diameter, at depths of up to 200 ft. Guidelines for the placement of such pipe are provided in ASTM F1962-22. Also small diameter (12 in. or smaller) horizontal directional drilling (HDD), sometimes referred to as "mini-HDD," is capable of drilling holes of up to 600 ft in length, and placing pipes of up to 12-in diameter, at depths of 15 ft. Influence of Weight-on-Bit on Percussive Drilling Performance A phenomenological model for percussive #drilling systems is proposed in this paper to explain the experimentally demonstrated existence of an optimal weight-on-bit (WOB), for which the rate of penetration (ROP) is maximized. Several hypotheses have been previously proposed to explain this universal characteristic of percussive drilling, including increased wear of the bit, reduced indexing, and poor cleaning of debris under excessive WOB. Motivated by experimental evidence, we instead consider an increase in the pseudo-stiffness of the bit-rock interface (BRI) with increasing WOB and investigate its effect on the impact energy transmitted to the rock. The 1D model approximates the dynamics underlying the drilling process by assuming that the impact of the hammer generates a longitudinal wave in the bit. the BRI pseudo-stiffness influences the incident wave and associated energy transmitted from the bit to the rock. As a consequence, the drilling efficiency is affected by the dependence of the BRI stiffness on the WOB. The model indicates that there exist optimal conditions for the energy transfer from the bit to the rock in terms of the impedance ratio and the BRI stiffness/WOB. Picture this: when the pumps are on, drilling mud flows into the formation; then, when the pumps are turned off, the formation pushes the mud back. So, how does it work?
