By targeting items like utensils, bags, and Styrofoam, the island's leadership is actively reducing waste and encouraging a shift in consumer behavior. This is a visionary move that I believe can inspire other nations to follow suit and integrate sustainability into their cultural events. 🌊 🌊 GRUPO MORÓN FOR THE OCEANS ‘Grupo Morón for the oceans' represents another milestone for Grupo Morón in its mission to preserve our natural resources and ensure a healthy environment for future generations. The problem of plastic in seas and oceans is one of the greatest environmental threats of our time. The Mediterranean Sea has the highest concentration of plastic on the planet, and it's our sea, the one that has defined our culture over the centuries. Therefore, Grupo Morón, in collaboration with Gravity Wave (an impact company), is carrying out the removal of over 10 tons of plastic from the sea and discarded fishing nets. 🌊🐋 Today we're celebrating #WorldOceansDay by asking: What do the oceans mean to you? 🐬🐟 We'll go first...   For most of us at TOMRA Collection, the challenges facing our oceans, such as plastic pollution, are what get us out of bed in the morning. That's because around 80% of ocean plastic flows from sources on land, creating devastating impacts for marine life. And it's the biggest chunk of that plastic that our work seeks to impact: product packaging.   In fact, TOMRA reverse vending solutions capture more than 46 billion used beverage containers every year for recycling and reuse, all across the globe, keeping them out of streets, rivers, landfills, and of course, oceans. But there's even more to this story!   By keeping the kinds of materials that these containers are made from in a continuous loop of use and reuse, it's possible to drastically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with them, while also ensuring that very few fresh resources are needed to make new containers. In this way, it's not just plastic pollution we're combating, but climate change too.   When bottles and cans are used to make new bottles and cans, we call it Clean Loop Recycling. And there's one place that knows more about this process than any other...   Considered the world role model for beverage container recovery and recycling, Norway’s deposit return system is one of the most efficient in the world. Less than 1% of beverage containers in Norway are littered, and only one in eight bottles that wash ashore on the Norwegian coastline actually come from Norway itself, the rest originate in neighboring countries.   It's examples like this that keep us going. And why, at TOMRA, we're on a mission to spread the concept of Clean Loop Recycling around the world! 🌍 After all, as long as the containers keep coming, year on year, we need to be doing something about them, keeping them in the Clean Loop and out of our oceans.   So that's our ocean story. In fact, it's estimated that 37 million tonnes of plastic will flood into the ocean annually by 2040. By 2050, plastic might outweigh fish. We need to #ActNow. That's why the European Commission, the United Nations, and the European External Action Service teamed up to launch the #EUBeachCleanUp. The campaign includes events organised across the world to remove litter from beaches. This will make them cleaner, safer, more enjoyable, and more biodiverse! The #EUBeachCleanUp will culminate on 16 September, the International Coastal Clean-up Day. On this day, one of our projects, MAELSTROM_H2020, is organising a clean-up in Vila do Conde, Portugal. Each one of us leaves a mark on our planet, and right now, our oceans are crying for help. This World Oceans Day, join us and POLO South Africa in standing with Zandi the Mermaid to fight against plastic waste, and its catastrophic effects on our marine ecosystem. Our oceans are drowning in plastic, and it’s time to make a change. We were delighted to design and craft this beautiful installation, that focuses on displaying and educating the public about sustainability and cleaning up the ocean. The activation was well received by the public on the 28th May to the 3rd of June. With Zandi’s story being displayed. “Each and every one of us leaves a mark behind. It’s in our power to make the world a little better for the next person. We are all part of one ecosystem, whether you’re on land, or beneath the surface of the water, “ says Zandile Ndhlovu. Happy World Environment Day! 🌍 Today, we celebrate our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our planet. Last month was impactful! With support from our partners Earth Animal and Fera Pets, Inc. , we organized a cleanup and awareness building effort in Buenaventura, a coastal town in Colombia which is also an estuary of the Pacific Ocean. Buenaventura - as a remote community with limited access - lacks waste infrastructure, and faces a severe plastic pollution problem. This risks harming marine life and local livelihoods. This is particularly significant, as renowned Humpback Whale breeding grounds lie just off Buenaventura's Pacific Coast. Thanks to Earth Animal and Fera Pets, along with our impact partner Ecoworks and dedicated volunteers, we cleaned up La Barra and Juan Chaco beaches, recovering nearly 50,000lbs of waste that would have otherwise washed out into the ocean. This effort shows how much we can achieve when we work together as a community. And there's more. While clean-ups provide one-off removal of legacy plastic waste, rePurpose Global has established a system to intercept plastic waste from Buenaventura's beaches that ensures it goes for sorting and recycling. By involving local communities, we're also creating new job opportunities, and supporting waste worker livelihoods. Now, the streets are cleaner, and animals are happier! 4. Sweden - Turning Trash into Power: - in Sweden, they use trash to make electricity! They burn it to create heat and power for homes. Hardly anything ends up in the garbage dump. Sweden shows us that trash can be a superhero, saving the planet! 5. The Ocean Cleanup Project - Heroes vs. Ocean Plastic: - Meet the Ocean Cleanup Project - the superheroes fighting plastic in our oceans. They use cool machines to clean up the mess. It's like a real-life superhero adventure, but for the ocean! Conclusion: These stories prove that regular people can do extraordinary things with our trash.
