Imposing a fine will not achieve what the City of Wodonga intends it will. It will not clean up the city or remove rough sleepers. It's a purely punitive response to a far more complex issue. LGAs would far better serve their communities in addressing rough sleeping by: 1. Advocating to Government at State and Federal level to address homelessness, housing supply, and affordability issues in their catchments. 2. Work out what can be done locally to provide access to amenities on council owned land such as showers, toilets and well lit areas. 3. Speed up local planning processes 4. Amending the proposed local law to exclude homeless people and rough sleepers from the fine process. You can't hide or solve homelessness by fining vulnerable people.

Today the Supreme Court ruled that cities can ban people from sleeping and camping in public places. This will only increase the suffering of the most vulnerable people in cities who chose to criminalize homelessness. KulshanCLT does not serve folks who are experiencing homelessness; however we are aware that issues across the spectrum of housing are interconnected. The rising cost of housing and the limited number of available, affordable housing opportunities make this a crisis that deserves our collective attention. We continue to work with all available partners to create more opportunities for affordable homeownership. Let's keep paying attention to what's happening across the full spectrum of housing nationally. Let's keep working together across sectors to ensure access to affordable housing for all. If you asked me this time last year what I would be doing, it certainly wouldn’t have been - taking annual leave to door knock around Sydney to raise awareness about homelessness, rough sleeping and our petition to Parliament! But here we are! 👋🏻 Everyone deserves a place to call home, yet rough sleeping is increasing across NSW at an alarming rate. The latest numbers from NSW Statewide Sleep Count and St Vincent de Paul Society NSW states: Byron Shire - 16% increase City of Sydney - 1% increase Tweed Valley - 20% increase Coffs Harbour - 79% increase Northern Beaches - 96% increase Wollongong - 41% increase Lismore - 60% increase Ballina - 110% increase Port Macquarie Hastings - 23% increase Mid Coast - 227% increase Newcastle - 717% increase Central Coast - 55% increase Lake Macquarie - 29% increase Liverpool - 567% increase Inner West - 371% increase These figures only relate to rough sleeping, there are many other forms of homelessness such as couch surfing, overcrowded dwellings, sleeping in cars etc. Therefore, it’s safe to assume the numbers are actually much higher for homelessness across NSW. We are in a national emergency and we need to do something different. How can we hope for our city to thrive when so many Memphians are just struggling to survive? Nearly 1 in 5 Memphians are food insecure. That’s 250,000 people! Over 30 percent of Memphians live in a food desert, the highest rate among U.S. metropolitan areas with more than 1 million people. In addition, over 30,000 eviction filings occur annually. Food insecurity and unstable housing arrangements make it nearly impossible to pursue workforce development services, education, and employment. If we aspire for our city to thrive economically, we must ensure these foundational needs are met. We recently came across an inspiring video how Finland is providing efficient and sustainable housing solutions to those in need. The Indigenous Medicine Wheel teachings remind us that all aspects of our lives are interconnected. Having a place to call home is fundamental, as it supports physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Addressing homelessness with holistic solutions can lead to healthier, more balanced communities. Why can't we implement these solutions here in Canada? We have the land and the need and utilising modular construction allows us to build homes faster, more efficiently, and affordably.
