Hey Tom, As long as you have your some Shake and Float in your kit, a really great thing to use if for is nymphs, especially caddis pupa imitations. Sounds counter-intuitive doesn't it? But if you treat your nymph with the Shake & Float, and fish with a small split shot to get it down, that nymph will actually capture some air when it breaks through the meniscus and it will surround the nymph with bubbles. To see this at home, just drop a bead-head nymph in your shake and float; shake it a could of times; and drop it in a glass of water. You'll see those bubbles surrounding the fly. That's pretty much exactly what a caddis pupa looks like in the drift. Dean Schubert and I were working the San Mateo Show back in the 90's when that was THE fly-fishing show in the SF Bay area, and we were talking to Ralph Cutter from the Truckee area. He's an author and ran the California School of Fly-fishing out of Truckee, CA before he retired. Anyhow, he got all exited about the Shake & Float, and described how he used it on fish. I've used it that way for the last 25-years or so on caddis pupa and sometimes on other nymphs too. So treat a nymph with it and drop it in a glass of water to see what it does. Enjoyed your video!
