Okay, Indeed, I get that you are trying to do a good thing. I would like some parts of the USA to get better at dealing with all sorts of individuals, including those in the LGBT+ Community. However, I'm also completely against this action for a simple reason - ableism. As Ci-gender woman that has well-controlled Epilepsy, I've been discriminated against within my own workplace (Walmart being the worst). I asked for reasonable accommodations and the Scheduling manager (i.e. Personal) kept scheduling me in ways that went against my accommodations and/or "kept forgetting" about the Epilepsy. I had to go to corporate to get help, and their Sedgwick thought that demotion = accommodation, which is why I ended up quitting that job for good. Keep in mind, I'm someone disabled that can: legal drive most of the time, hold a job, be able to attend college classes, advocate for herself, etc. Many people with both visible disabilities and/or invisible disabilities CAN"T keep a job due to how the ADA is ignored and/or interrupted by various organizations. If you want full inclusivity, help the people that were messed up by complete happenstance FIRST. Find a way to make employers understand the ADA and work with the ADA, PROPERLY.

Under the new initiative 'Ontario Helping Family Doctors Put Patients before Paperwork,' the government is easing the administrative burden on our hardworking family doctors. Key Points: Reducing Administrative Tasks for Doctors: Family doctors spend 19 hours a week on admin tasks, including 4 hours on sick notes and forms. Changes to Sick Leave Documentation: Employees are entitled to up to 3 days of unpaid, job-protected sick leave annually. Proposed changes will prohibit employers from requiring sick notes from healthcare practitioners. Employers can still request reasonable evidence, such as a personal attestation. I was listening to a patient family member complain last week and heard a startling statement. The family member was angry at my staff for declining to care (not emergent or urgent care) for her husband until he stopped yelling and shouting inappropriate demands at them. The startling part was the family member's question to me, "where is your staff's compassion?". This is not the first time I have heard this and it most likely won't be the last. I wholeheartedly believe everyone deserves kindness, understanding, and compassion, but my nurses or any nurses removing themselves from an abusive (yes, abusive) situation is NOT A LACK OF COMPASSION. I am starting to realize that the healthcare industry is in a TOXIC relationship with the public/patients/consumers (whatever term is preferable) and that that toxic relationship will not resolve until healthcare workers set boundaries to prevent the abuse. There are national conversations about how healthcare organizations are the major contributor to the workforce shortages and I agree that the way organizations treat the bedside staff is a factor but the number one factor effecting healthcare workers staying at the bedside are the patients and the families themselves. What would make me enjoy coming to work more? Not getting yelled at or called inappropriate names, or kicked or hit. What would better control my workload and decrease patient to nurse ratios? Having healthier people in the community that don't need acute care, that follow doctor's orders and practice preventable health (please know that this is not referencing populations most effected by social determinants). I just want people to take care of themselves and stop eating food that isn't nutritious and not getting minimal exercise. What would decrease healthcare spending? Healthier communities So, the solution to fixing the US healthcare industry does not begin with healthcare organizations but with the people who use healthcare.

One year ago *this* week, I went on a walk in the park, had a minor fall, and broke my leg in three places. As a newly self employed person at the time, breaking my leg was especially scary - my market-place provided healthcare plan (which costs nearly $500/month), barely covered anything, and left me with more than 10k in medical bills. This is a huge expense for anyone, and felt especially huge for me, as a person who mainly worked for nonprofits and scraped for years to build a savings cushion that was nearly wiped out by a single accident. Why am I posting this on LinkedIn? Because every single day, I work on creating HR policies and practices with people's wellbeing in mind, but I *still* don't think that your access to healthcare should be dependent on where you work. I work with leaders who grapple with this reality all the time - in the absence of leadership and support from our government structures, we're left to piece together whatever we can at the individual level, and this often leaves people behind, including folks managing with chronic illness and disability, (and temporary disability like the one I faced with my broken leg), new parents, and caregivers of all kinds. As I work to urge those I collaborate with to create the most humane policies and practices possible at their organizations, I will never stop advocating for common sense, holistic solutions like universal healthcare, paid caregiver leave, and a paradigm shift towards systems and economies that keep the whole person in mind.
