Black students make up around a quarter of the city’s more than one million public-school pupils. However, Black instructors are disproportionately underrepresented among the faculty who teach them. I was fortunate enough to be able to hire them in assistant principal positions after mentoring them through school building leadership programs. Two of the 8 are principals during this 2023 National Principals Month, 1 Education Administrator and 4 Interim Acting Assistant Principals. October 29, 2023, is the 3rd anniversary of TheMister Falzone Nicholas Peter Falzone's death. Black, Asian and ethnically diverse school pupils in the UK are crying out for ‘people who look like them.’ That’s according to the Black head teachers interviewed in a new book, Letters to a Young Generation: Aspiring School Leaders, by Amanda Wilson. This recent article in The Guardian looks at how Wilson’s book is encouraging Black teachers to pursue leadership positions, to combat their under-representation in the sector. Research shows that all students benefit from seeing diverse teachers and school leaders working together to build inclusive, respectful school cultures with high expectations. Yet despite these documented benefits, the diversity of the pupil body in schools in England is outstripping the teaching workforce. Minority ethnic applicants to initial teacher training are substantially less likely to be accepted, with applicants recorded as Black having the lowest acceptance rate and substantially lower than those for white applicants. In 2021, of the 20,786 headteachers in England, only 1% were Black. To give our children the best chance in life, the way we recruit teachers and mould school leaders needs to change. At the start of the year, almost half of the third graders (43%) started the year with kindergarten-level phonics skills (3+ years below). At the end of the year 66% of 3rd graders had advanced one grade level or more. #structuredliteracy #reading #95percentgroup
