At WWDC, Apple finally unveiled their long awaited AI strategy. Our take? Researchers explored the possibility of using AI to detect when users are speaking to their devices, eliminating the need for a trigger phrase. By training a large language model with smartphone speech and background noise data, the team achieved promising results, outperforming audio-only or text-only models. It's unclear if Apple plans to implement this change. WHAT I TOOK AWAY FROM APPLE’S BIG ANNOUNCEMENT Apple has been notably quiet about AI until this week. That’s Apple being Apple—they’re rarely the first ones in on a new tech trend. They only dive in when they feel like they can: a) Create a great experience b) Dominate the market The WWDC demos highlight an important shift happening in AI right now. CREATING A GREAT EXPERIENCE Apple's greatest asset in the AI race is access to your personal data. They can leverage their AI to gather incredible context around you—your needs, interests, desires, preferences, and goals—and deliver delightful experiences. Context is king when it comes to AI. The biggest downside of ChatGPT is that it knows everything about general knowledge but nothing about you. DOMINATING WITH AI When Apple’s newly beefed-up Siri gets a question it can’t answer, it can call in ChatGPT for backup. Siri can now understand natural speech, has more context on who you are, and can even fill out documents for you. Apple made some very smart moves here: - Running local, powerful AI models on your devices’ hardware, tuned for specific use cases, to handle simple questions using your personal data safely. - When they need help, they call a larger model “in the cloud.” - Apple has built a medium-sized model that the iPhone can call in the cloud, akin to GPT-3.5. - Apple Intelligence can call on ChatGPT’s superior intelligence to solve more complex problems. - Apple outsources queries it can’t confidently answer to ChatGPT, shifting the risk of errors and hallucinations to OpenAI. Apple’s deep AI integrations into all parts of the operating system will erode demand for typing into browser based ChatGPT or Claude. APPLE ❤️ OPENAI Why did OpenAI open up its marriage with Microsoft to a polygamous relationship with Apple? Because Apple controls the rails! It has access to your phone, computer, watch, airpods, and all the sensors and data that come with them. This is a baller move for Apple because they’re going to sell so much more hardware. Apple Intelligence will only be available on the latest devices with super-upgraded chips. It’ll be easier and faster to use something that’s baked into your device’s OS, with access to maximum context from all your apps and websites. The more context an AI system has, the better its results will be—lower hallucination rates and greater trust, even if its intelligence level is lower. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? For business owners, this mean more powerful tools at your fingertips. Imagine having AI that not only knows all knowledge, but also knows you and your business needs inside and out. This can revolutionize how you manage tasks, interact with clients, and make decisions. Apple’s move could be a game-changer in boosting productivity and creativity by seamlessly integrating AI into its devices. The future of AI is about creating personalized, context-aware experiences that can make you more productive and creative.

Well, well, well. It looks like #Apple has finally decided to join the #AI party with iOS 18, but in true Apple fashion, they're doing it their own way. Instead of jumping on the chatbot bandwagon and risking the hilarious (but potentially disastrous) hallucinations we've seen from the likes of #Google and #Microsoft, Apple's "Intelligence" is all about practicality (and putting hardware competitors like Rabbit R1 and Humane AI pin, and software services like Grammarly out of business). Because writing help, smart notifications, AND the ability to remove your ex from photos? Sign me up! But here's the thing: Apple's not trying to revolutionize the world with its AI. (Erm, #OpenAI's AI, if we're nitpicking.) They're not even calling it AI, for crying out loud. "Apple Intelligence" is like that quiet kid in the back of the class who's actually a genius but doesn't feel the need to show it off. It's there to make our lives easier, not to be the star of the show. And honestly, that's kind of refreshing in a world where every #tech company is shouting "AI! AI! AI!" from the rooftops.

Apple announced that it is integrating AI tools into its OS this fall. Your phone will now know which messages are important and will need immediate attention. It will help you summarize, write, or revise text. It will have built in image generation. It will have more natural language interaction. Individually these are not earth shattering changes.
