I've said it once, and I'll stay it until things change, (but given the state of politics and the quality of career politicians in Australia, I expect to well in the ground before someone sees the obvious benefit). However, macabre imagery aside - the importance of lithium production and the necessity for upstream value-added processing in Australia are paramount. With the demand for lithium-ion batteries rapidly increasing (seen here), particularly fuelled by the electric vehicle market and energy storage systems, Australia's role in the global lithium supply chain gains critical significance. Australia possesses substantial lithium reserves, notably in Western Australia, making it among the top producers globally. However, merely extracting raw lithium ore is insufficient to fully exploit this resource. Upstream value-added processing, including refining and chemical conversion, is essential to realise the complete economic potential of lithium - **AS A START**. Investing in upstream processing facilities in Australia offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it adds value to the raw lithium ore, enabling Australia to secure a larger share of the lithium market's value chain. This not only generates employment opportunities but also strengthens the country's economic resilience and competitiveness on the global stage. Moreover, establishing local processing plants reduces dependence on exporting raw materials, thereby mitigating risks associated with fluctuating commodity prices and geopolitical tensions. It also drives technological innovation and nurtures a skilled workforce in advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors. Furthermore, value-added processing aligns with sustainability goals by facilitating the production of higher-grade lithium products with reduced environmental footprints. Through stringent environmental standards and the utilisation of renewable energy sources in processing facilities, Australia can position itself as a responsible global leader in sustainable lithium production

Together, four #battery cell components— #cathodes and #anodes, #separators, #electrolytes, and #cell packaging—are the main drivers for cell performance, particularly as it relates to energy density, cycle life, charging rate, and safety. Europe accounts for only 3% of cathode material production and 2% of anode production, while North America produces less than 1% of cathode active material and 5% of anode material. Just 7% of electrolyte production and 4% of separator production is housed in both regions combined. This considerable gap between demand for cell components and local supply signals growth opportunities in the battery component market. The global revenue pool of the core cell components is expected to continue growing by around 17% a year through 2030.
