One of the amazing things about our #chronicpain patients is the way they've learned to adapt their everyday activities due to limitations that they're facing. Chronic pain challenges inspire a whole host of creativity and ingenuity, which can be really additive in life and in the workplace. So before counting out people with physical difficulties or disabilities, think about what they've overcome and what you can learn from their. Disability is a form of DEI that all workplaces should care about. Check out our latest blog post on the topic! https://lnkd.in/ecnFPg6z

From Work Design Magazine: Up to 20% of the population falls into the category of neurodivergent. Conditions and differences that used to carry a stigma are now becoming more accepted, even celebrated, at school, at work and in personal relationships. Sensory processing challenges and differences often accompany autism and ADHD. And in fact, many neurotypical people deal with sensory challenges, perhaps without realizing it. Getting distracted by too much (or too little) noise, becoming overwhelmed with lighting or temperature disturbances, or disliking how certain furniture fits their body or how fabrics feel against the skin, are some common examples. In the workplace, that can translate into zones for different types of work. Focus rooms are great for heads-down space, privacy, and sound control, while “War Rooms” or “Sandboxes” are higher-stimulation spaces ideal for group work and socializing. Things like sit-stand desks and encouraging movement through policy and layout design can keep all employees active and engaged. Incorporating adjustable lighting and temperature control opportunities at each workspace can increase employee morale and productivity. And the use of biophilia and natural light throughout an office environment can give a proven mental health boost. What does 'Peppa Pig' have to do with #neurodiversityinclusion at work? 🐷🏢🏙🏗➿ Leaving aside a frankly crackers theory from a few years ago that the popular cartoon series causes autism in children (!) I was delighted recently to stumble - thanks to my son, for whom it constitutes a #specialinterest - across a spin-off episode called "George's Relaxation Rooms". Without ever referencing #neurodiversity directly, it presents a simple but elegant case for spaces that are by design intense, noisy and crowded - in this case a soft-play centre, but it could easily be a corporate office - mindfully setting aside a secluded, calm area for those who may find the main environment overwhelming. The rooms the Pig family and friends retreat to when George experiences sensory overload offer calming lighting, relaxing seating, weighted blankets, fidget toys and a reconnection with nature. This recognises that #sensorychallenges encompass all *eight* senses, and can entail under- as well as over-stimulation. And these are all attributes and equipment recommended for sensory spaces that are gladly becoming more commonplace in public spaces like football stadiums, airports and shopping centres - as well as the premises of employers like Bayer. As I wrote in a recent article in 'The Law Society Gazette' with my fabulous colleague JJ Thompson, and as we set out in more detail in the recent recommendations report published by the Legal Neurodiversity Network, the associated concept of #inclusivedesign is gradually gaining profile across enlightened and inclusive employers - for whom factoring in neuro-inclusive design features and spaces need not be expensive, especially at the planning stage for premises moves or refits. Is where you work making this welcome change for people with #hiddendisabilities? If so, I'd love to hear more - or see photos! #neurodiversityatwork #neurodiversityinlaw

Trauma-informed design is an approach that takes into consideration the potential impact of built environments on individuals who have experienced trauma. By incorporating principles such as safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment, designers can create spaces that promote healing and well-being. This approach is particularly important in settings such as healthcare facilities, schools, and social service agencies. By implementing trauma-informed design, we can create environments that support the recovery and resilience of those who have experienced trauma. #traumainformeddesign #healingenvironments #wellbeing

Neurodiversity: Designing for Inclusivity Presented by Sarah Proefrock| HOK | Senior Associate Interior Designer We are living in a time of increased diagnosis and awareness of neurodivergent conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Tourettes, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, and Parkinson’s. People who are neurodiverse are wired differently and often their differences can be an extraordinary strength in the workplace. The neurodivergent thinker often possesses extraordinary talents when it comes to innovation, creative storytelling, empathy, design concepts, alternative thinking, and problem-solving. Neurodivergents can bring exceptional value to a team but navigating the modern workplace can be a challenge. Not only is designing space to be inclusive the right thing to do but there is also a compelling business case for it as well. Space today needs to reflect the diverse makeup of organizations to set all up for success. Thrilled to see this feature come to life, featuring Patrice Hayden Meagher, CEO of MilkMate, a breast pumping solution for the workplace, in Crain's New York Business. Love seeing our communications clients win! It's time that we not only include mothers in the workplace, but start *building* with them in mind. Research has shown that companies with lactation support programs experience higher retention rates among working mothers (le duh!). Plus, providing these facilities builds a more inclusive and supportive company culture, making it easier to attract top talent. Let's not forget the ROI here. A study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that for every dollar invested in breastfeeding support, employers can save $3 in healthcare costs and $2 in employee turnover costs. In the end, it's about more than just numbers. It's about creating equitable work environments that are built for the representative teams within them. MilkMate is leading the charge of creating an environment where mothers are not only welcome, but supported in the workplace. Kudos to Sara Lueders Kari Porter and Yafit Gani for making this piece happen! https://lnkd.in/gEBNKAXd
