On January 9, 2020, I co-hosted an impact investing event on a farm for our investors in rePlant. It was the first time I heard the name Holly Ziegel Ruxin. After my presentation, a guy beelined it to me and said "You have to meet Holly." A few years later, I kept hearing the same. The husband of a friend hammered both of us about it. One of my co-founders at rePlant said the same. So about a year ago, I met with Holly for the first time in person, in her Montcalm - Impact Wealth Management offices in the Presidio in San Francisco. She's been in impact and investments for her entire career, with most of her time spent at Morgan Stanley, outperforming everyone else. She's also a mom of three, including a child named Trevor, with special needs. Last December, we decided we should host a small convening together and invited friends to explore how they felt about their money, if it was invested in a way that is aligned with their values. It planted the seed of something so much bigger, and last week, Montcalm, Holly, myself and others hosted our first conference together at the Presidio Officer's Club. Fifteen years ago, when I was calling for changing the food system, few were paying attention, most thought it naive. And they were wrong. It's time to rethink the financial system, its extractive nature and externalized costs. There will be plenty who will say (again), "Good luck with that, Robyn." I am reminded (again) of that Margaret Mead quote, like so many times before: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. Early stage founders often ask me what to look for in follow up investors after their seed/ early A rounds. While the list below is full of great investors, don't get caught up trying to have the biggest name in your syndicate. Finding an investor who will invest not only money, but also time to help you realize your goals, has led to the best results.
