After a natural disaster strikes, every second matters. As extreme weather events like fires and floods grow more common, X Project Bellwether has been exploring how AI and geospatial data can be used to help communities understand risk and prepare for natural disasters. In partnership with the Army National Guard and Civil Air Patrol, Bellwether has developed a geospatial image-matching tool to help first responders identify critical infrastructure following extreme weather or natural disasters so they can deliver help more quickly. Bellwether uses machine learning to analyze aerial imagery of disaster scenes within seconds, identify impacted infrastructure, and create labeled maps in order to inform the National Guard’s response. Helping people and making a difference. :-) For the past 3 days the United States Air Force Civil Air Patrol Geospatial team and FEMA members have been conducting geospatial damage assessments for the South Fork and Salt fires in New Mexico. The response is always a collaborative effort between the assessment teams and those who create the data we use. Thanks to Maxar Technologies, Planet, ICEYE, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency for providing the imagery and derived products used to conduct the assessments, and Esri for the environment to work in. How is this validated? A Presidential Disaster Declaration given from The White House within two days and quickly helping get aid to the people that need it. https://lnkd.in/eNMBWxu4 #helpingothers #geospatial #gis #geospatialintelligence #disasterresponse #disasterrecovery #teamwork #wildlandfire #newmexico #servicetoothers

“The ultimate purpose of the military in a democracy is to keep people alive!” Capt Scott Shields After tropical storm 🌀 Ernesto United States Army delivers much needed communications equipment to the devastated areas of Puerto Rico. Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 USA 🇺🇸 Puerto Rico – Elements of the 35th Expeditionary Signal Battalion – Enhanced (ESB-E) are on their way to the U.S. Virgin Islands after the activation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico in response to Tropical Storm Ernesto’s pending arrival to the U.S territories and Puerto Rican islands. During natural disasters, maintaining clear lines of communication is critical, especially for government agencies working tirelessly to support communities in need. The 35th Expeditionary Signal Battalion-Enhanced (ESB-E) is the backbone of these efforts, keeping lines of communication open to allow for coordinated, effective disaster relief, this time due to Tropical Storm Ernesto. The 35th ESB-E Soldiers are sending Soldiers who are already on orders fresh off of Caribbean Thunder 2024 exercise with expertise in specialized communications equipment to the U.S. Virgin Islands as part of their rapid response efforts. These highly trained soldiers, equipped with the best communications technology available to combat forces, known as the Scalable Network Node (SNN), are establishing secure and robust communication links for local and federal agencies during and after the storm. https://lnkd.in/e3qk2mkf

AFAC24 powered by INTERSCHUTZ - real world outcomes that support safer communities and more effective outcomes for emergency service organisations. Celeste Young RDR Network, Victoria University Systems Based Approaches for Innovation and Impact Systems based approaches and innovation are widely acknowledged as being a central aspect of ensuring the future viability and sustainability of communities and Emergency Management organisations. Developing and implementing these approaches requires generating new knowledge and ways of working and extensive collaboration across emergency management organisations, research, communities, and industries. The Risk, Disaster and Resilience (RDR) Network at Victoria University is an initiative which brings together diverse areas of research from across Victoria University who collaborate with communities, governments, communities, and industry to achieve real world outcomes that support safer communities and more effective outcomes for emergency service organisations. This presentation will outline how the RDR Network’s end user focused approach has enabled innovation and supported building capability in systems focused policy and practice. It will also provide examples of the types of real-world impacts achieved through their work to date. The C295 medium tactical transport aircraft has become a key asset for the day-to-day operations of the countries in Latin America due to its versatility and reliability in the most demanding weather conditions, and adapting to different operational needs. It is available for everyday tasks, such as the transport of personnel, goods or coastal surveillance, as well as for more complex missions in response to accidents or natural disasters, like hurricanes, fires and earthquakes, which require search and rescue, detection and monitoring, or access to remote locations with unprepared terrain. Oh, the humanity! - Herbert Morrison . The Hindenburg disaster was a tragic event that occurred on May 6, 1937, when the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey, United States. The disaster resulted in 36 fatalities. . The airship was filled with hydrogen, which is highly flammable, and when it ignited, the fire spread rapidly, causing the Hindenburg to quickly become engulfed in flames. The exact cause of the fire has never been determined definitively, but theories include a spark caused by static electricity or a structural failure that allowed hydrogen to leak and mix with air. . The Hindenburg disaster led to increased safety regulations for airships and highlighted the dangers of using hydrogen gas for lift. Following the disaster, helium, a non-flammable gas, became the preferred choice for airship buoyancy, but it was in short supply and expensive, contributing to the decline of the airship as a mode of transportation. . The most important thing in the programming of an airplane is the man who flies it - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry . Technology — National Guard Embracing AI for Disaster Response “The ultimate purpose of the military in a democracy is to keep people alive!“ Until now, the National Guard has relied on human analysts to examine satellite imagery and video feeds to identify damaged areas, buildings, and infrastructure after disasters like tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires. However, by the time this information reaches key decision-makers, the realities on the ground have often evolved significantly, which complicates resource allocation. Two wildfires in New Mexico have scorched more than 24,000 acres and destroyed 1,400 structures. The wildfires, named the South Fork and Salt fires, continue to spread as the region faces threats of flash flooding. These satellite images show an overview of the South Fork wildfire in both natural color and color infrared. In the infrared image, black/grey shades show burned areas while red/pink shades depict healthy vegetation. Our team has been working with first responders to help conduct damage assessments in partnership with the United States Air Force Civil Air Patrol, FEMA and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The wildfires remain 0% contained according to the State of New Mexico’s latest update. #satelliteimagery #nmfire #southforkfire #saltfire #ruidoso #disasterresponse #geospatialintelligence #gis #geospatial
