My colleague Scott Crawford reminded me of this chart earlier in his post inviting you to read our annual information security trends report (https://lnkd.in/ei2Aph38). It's one of the few 2x2 matrices (*cough* quadrants) produced in the end user security research, all based on responses to questions rating the importance of different application security testing (AST) attributes. What's interesting this year, but maybe not surprising, is that a desire for some manner of integration between 'shift-right' and 'shift-left' is a key desired feature for appsec practitioners. This desire is primarily predicated on achieving some sort of prioritization to apply to the sometimes overwhelming amount of findings AST tools are throwing off when integrated into the development lifecyle. Where are attacks actually happening in production? If we can't fix everything, what should we fix? As noted in the trends report: "For years, a false dichotomy pitted shift-left and shift-right strategies against each other, suggesting that an enterprise could do just one or the other. However, this strategy was incomplete. In reality, application protection (shift-right) helps to block newly identified vulnerabilities, giving development teams time to identify and implement fixes within the application code itself (shift-left). Application security solutions must facilitate prioritization of those code fixes by helping stakeholders better understand the context in which applications operate in production." #applicationsecurity
