✨I am thrilled to announce the publication of my latest research paper, "ESG Performance and Corporate Digital Transformation," in the prestigious Highlights in Business, Economics and Management journal. This work was presented at the 4th International Conference on Financial Economics and Investment Management (FEIM 2024). This paper provides a analysis of how two leading companies, Sun Hung Kai Properties and MTR Corporation, are leveraging digital transformation to drive remarkable improvements across the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) spectrum. Through an in-depth case study approach, the research uncovers innovative strategies these organizations are deploying. This edition of the paper focuses on three key themes that may merit careful examination in the current climate; ESG, hurdle rates, and fee compression.

In our new working paper, Peiran Jiao, Bin Fumitake Dong and I investigate the role of beliefs in measuring sustainability preferences. Trillions of dollars flow into socially responsible investments (SRIs), yet it is unclear how investors trade off sustainability with financial performance. To formally evaluate this, we need a reliable method to elicit investors' belief towards the financial performance of SRI, which is still lacking in the literature. Paper can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/g838cw3N We formally investigate investors' expectations towards funds' financial performances associated with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) labels through an incentivized field survey experiment that compares three different belief elicitation methods, two incentivized and one unincentivized. Our findings from both incentivized methods suggest that knowledge of a fund's high ESG rating on average positively influences return expectations. This is in contrast to the same group of participants' answers to the commonly used unincentivized Likert scale question. Furthermore, return expectations towards high ESG funds elicited by the incentivized methods are positively correlated with allocation to sustainable funds in an incentivized allocation task. Our results imply that unincentivized methods of eliciting ESG-related beliefs may be systematically biased. Our research contributes to understanding investors' motive for engaging in SRI, and practically dissecting sustainability preferences. These findings have many other implications for legislation and regulation of private wealth management, true preference elicitation requirements (MIFID), communication and accountability, and product development. So here's part three, and the final episode, in the series Does Sustainable Investing (SI) Work, co-authored with Tom Gosling. (https://lnkd.in/eGVdXT9H) In the first two articles we discussed: - the three-stage rocket analogy: for there to be 'impact', SI practices should have direct, indirect and system-level effects; and - (based on a review of the the academic literature) the efficacy of engagement and capital allocation (divestment/investment) in achieving stage 1 and 2 effects. (You'll find the links to those articles and the literature review in this one). This third article is all about stage 3: the extent to which SI practices can have impacts at the system level. Unfortunately, the academic research provides very little evidence that those system-level impacts exist, and here we also discuss some reasons as to why that may be the case. But there's no reason for despair: we also offer some recommendations on practices that investors looking for real-world impact can deploy: 1. "Limitations-aware" engagement 2. Engaging with private markets and blended finance 3. Public policy advocacy We conclude as follows: "We believe a meaningful contribution is possible, but it requires a greater level of modesty about what the industry can achieve. (...) By focusing in a realistic and hard-headed way on their role in the team, sustainable investors can achieve much more." This great book by Lukasz Pomorski finally arrived last week!  I can strongly recommend it to people interested a discussion of sustainable investing that is driven by data and grounded in theory!  This will go on the reading list for when I next teach my „climate finance“ class at NYU Stern School of Business!
