🧙🏻♂️ Our most popular announcement this week is Causal's new Stripe integration + wizard, which we've been "dogfooding" for the last month. Last week after testing every nook and cranny, we fully switched all our SaaS reporting from ChartMogul to Causal. Here's why... Taking a bit of a step back — all startups use Stripe for payments processing, and they're great at that. But what Stripe isn't great for is revenue reporting. You can get high-level MRR numbers out of Stripe and this is good enough when you're getting your first customers, but once your business gets off the ground, you need to go deeper on your SaaS metrics: 1. Net Dollar Retention (NDR) 2. MRR movements by Product 3. Average Revenue per User (ARPU) & lots more, as well as putting those numbers into context by understanding trends and comparisons over time. Stripe can't do any of this, so you need to use a "SaaS reporting" tool. The issue with SaaS reporting tools like ChartMogul, Profitwell, etc. is that they're black boxes —  • You can't audit or customise the way that calculations are done (and there are lots of nuances and decisions that need to be made) • You can't calculate your own custom metrics (e.g. Burn Multiple, based on Cash Burn and New ARR) • You can't create custom visualisations to present your metrics in the best way for your team With Causal's Stripe wizard, you can connect to your Stripe account in a couple of clicks, and Causal will automatically generate a SaaS metrics report from your data, with all the key SaaS metrics you care about. And the beauty of having this in Causal is that you can do whatever you want with the data — set up forecasts, fix data issues using overrides, create custom metrics, linking to your other models (e.g. Runway), etc. If your company uses Stripe, then try out our new Stripe wizard and let me know what you think! When starting a side project or SaaS, it's tempting to use those fancy third-party services for stuff like auth, email, or file uploads when you're just starting out? Yeah, been there, done that. Here's the deal: I recently built getmyfolio.com (my latest side project), and I thought I was being smart by using a third-party auth service. Don't get me wrong, it was great at first! Saved me a ton of time, let me focus on the cool features I actually wanted to build. But here's where it gets tricky... Now that the project's grown way bigger than I expected (yay!), I'm realizing I'm kinda... stuck. Like, vendor locked-in stuck. If I want to switch things up or roll my own auth system now, it's gonna be a massive pain. Don't get me wrong, these services can be awesome. But man, the long-term flexibility trade-off is real. So, word to the wise: think long and hard about those "time-saving" third-party services. Is Freemium the Right Choice for Your SaaS Business? 🤔 Freemium is a popular pricing model for SaaS businesses, but it's not always the right choice. In fact, it can be counterproductive if you're not careful. 🤔 Here's why: - Freemium can lead to churn. When users can access a basic version of your product for free, they're less likely to upgrade to a paid plan. - Freemium can be expensive. You need to provide enough value in your free plan to attract users, but you also need to make sure it's not so valuable that users don't see the need to upgrade. - Freemium can be confusing. Users may not understand the difference between your free and paid plans, which can lead to frustration and churn. 🤔 Equals, a SaaS startup, learned this the hard way. They launched with a freemium model, but they soon realized it was costing them customers. 🤔 They decided to ditch the free plan and replace it with a free trial that required users to provide their credit card information.
