This past summer, I spent some time researching the iPaaS space. Through conversations with founders and executives in companies such as OpenLegacy and Workato, I put together a doc with my thoughts on how to found/invest in the space.

Today, Emergence Capital releases its inaugural edition of Beyond Benchmarks, a deep dive into the metrics and trends observed across the early-stage enterprise cloud market. Many thanks to our VC partners and those that contributed to make this report possible! To give you a small snippet of what we found 👇 1) 60% of companies have already integrated GenAI into their service offerings, and an additional 20% are planning to do so this year. 2) Most companies are utilizing OpenAI as their primary LLM, but many are experimenting with multiple models - and we are noticing an early trend towards intelligently routing GenAI inference requests to different models based on cost, performance, and security. 3) Though we are in the initial innings of GenAI, we are seeing some positive signals - companies that implemented GenAI had 7% higher NDR than those that did not. Beyond Benchmarks goes “beyond” with more GenAI trends as well as insights around the current fundraising environment and key performance metrics. In the realms of investing in scientifically complex innovation like data, deep tech, and AI, there are many hot shining opportunities to chase, but there also comes a reckoning. A thoughtful post by Kevin Xu on the capital intensity of moat in AI.
Anthropic's leaked financials of 50-55% gross margin got a lot of attention. I did some research using Redpoint Ventures' cloud infrastructure software index (or InfraRed, cool name) as comparison -- a basket of 20 or so publicly-traded cloud infra companies Here's what I found: Mean gross margin % of InfraRed is: 78% Highest outlier is GitLab: 91% Lowest outlier is Twilio: 49.95% No other company's GM is below 60% From this lens, Anthropic's 50-55% looks pretty bad. But I do think it's unfair to give a two-year-old startup's gross margin a hard time; most startups at that stage aren't, and shouldn't be, focused on fine tuning their GM % It does point at a larger question of whether there is a ceiling to AI model companies' gross profitability that is lower than cloud infra companies (both are building software infra in a sense) If so, then the valuations that some AI model companies are getting are wildly out of whack, especially when interest rates will be meaningfully above 0 for at least another 2-4 years

Congrats Vinoth Chandar. It's great to see real open innovation being rewarded. AI early funding rounds capture the headlines, but Lakehouses are quietly revolutionizing the Big Data that fuels them. The term “Big Data” was popularized in the Hadoop era, primarily supporting unstructured content. Since then, object storage has replaced file systems for two key reasons: Cost-efficiency from the separation of compute and storage. Superior support for both unstructured and structured data. EDW platforms with isolated storage, like Redshift, merely shift costs from on-premises to the cloud [pun intended]. In contrast, Lakehouses, built on open table formats, lower costs and disrupt vendor lock-in. This trend is evident with Databricks' acquisition of Tabular for an estimated $2-$3 billion and Onehouse's impressive $35 million Series B raise. More announcements in this space are sure to follow. Astute investors recognize that the most impressive engine is inert without a fuel source. Similarly, data infrastructure is crucial for AI. From the boardroom to operations and the sales floor, data is as indispensable as the powerful generative AI algorithms and models that are transforming industries. #Snowflake is scheduled to report earnings on November 29, when investors will be watching closely for updates on the company’s artificial intelligence software. The cloud-computing data management company is expected to post earnings of $0.16 per share on revenue of $713.06 million. “We left SNOW's product day upbeat about the latest innovations but with tempered expectations on near-term revenue contribution given that these products are in preview,” analysts at Jefferies wrote in a note to clients. The company recently announced Snowflake Cortex, a service that hosts and serves AI models; Universal Search, a consolidated data cloud search tool; and Snowflake Copilot, a large language model-powered assistant. “We believe SNOW is positioning itself well to capture a larger share of AI workloads in the medium to long term with today's product announcements,” they added. Here are some insights that resonated across both forums. 🌟 At the London Enterprise Tech Meetup: Hosted by Ian Ellis at the prestigious London Stock Exchange, this meetup brought together over 100 IT leaders. While the focus was on FinOps, I highlighted the crucial link between FinOps and a broad portfolio of Digital, Data & AI use cases and outcomes. The key takeaway? Understanding the business value is essential to assess spending coherence and identify cost-saving opportunities. 💡 Key Insights: - The importance of integrating FinOps with overall business strategy. 💼 - Assessing cloud investments for maximum value and cost optimization. ☁️💰 - FinOps as a tool for ROI evaluation and guiding further optimizations. 📈 🗼 At the datacraft event in Paris: This gathering of Data Governance Leaders, featuring insights from Xavier Maroteaux, focused on building an efficient data governance practice aligned with business value. My contribution was to share frameworks and guidelines for aligning data governance with high-value use cases. 💡 Key Insights: - Building awareness and an operating model for data governance. 🛠️ - Prioritizing and aligning data governance with business strategy for maximum impact... and making the case for adequate funding. 🔍 🔗 Connecting the Dots: The main commonality between these sessions? The imperative of a value-driven approach. By starting with expected outcomes, we can align operating models, practices, and value streams effectively.
