Land Surveyor, Civil Engineer, Expert in Antique Surveying Instruments, Instrument Makers, Surveying and Mapping.
One Hundred and sixty three years ago today, on February 28, 1861, the Territory of Colorado was created. The boundaries were defined in an enabling act on March 21, 1864 as: On the south, the 37th degree of North latitude. On the west, the 32nd degree of West longitude from Washington. On the north by the 41st degree of North latitude, and on the east by the 25th degree of West longitude from Washington. Colorado City was its Territorial capital from 1861 t0 1862, Golden City from 1862-1867, and Denver City from 1867 until Colorado became a state in 1876. It should be noted that the March 24, 1864 description set 0º longitude in Washington, D.C. The only known plan of Colorado City was drawn in 1859 by Henry Martyn Fosdick (1822-1899), a civil engineer and surveyor.

Just another reminder of how important the role of design is in roadway safety. Reframing the narrative around fault and the role of transportation engineers and urban planners in mitigating accidents is an uphill battle, but an important one.
“Could my 84-year-old mother navigate this? Could she do this at night? Could she do this in the rain? If the answer is no, I’m not doing a good enough job at making this intersection user-friendly.” — Melany Alliston, PE, Civil Engineering Practice Director at Toole Design In a recent Strong Towns Crash Analysis Studio session, Melany asked these critical questions as part of her analysis of a fatal crash in Huntsville, Alabama. By exploring the conditions that set up the intersection for failure, we can take action to prevent future crashes. Hear more of Melany's analysis in the session recording here: https://lnkd.in/gUXvsHGV Read through the key takeaways at the link below 👇
