Overdue reminders for a card I don't remember applying for or owning? Talk about a financial identity crisis! Thousands of HSBC customers were left furious from last week's outage during one of the UK's busiest shopping days of the year. The firm estimates that nine out of 10 transactions at the bank are made digitally. Some customers were upset to miss discounted Black Friday purchases, while others were deeply concerned because they were unable to pay bills. One customer says "...branches have been systematically and carelessly closed throughout the region, this loss of service means that some would have to make a round trip of some 450 miles to access their accounts." HSBC previously announced that they would close 114 branches in the UK in 2023 which has lead to an increase in customers using online banking. This incident highlights the major repercussions of IT downtime. Having the convenience of electronic money transactions is one thing - being forced down the route to use it exclusively is something completely different! Taken from BTG daily newsletter today, summarising items in The Sun and The Daily Mail: "Banks close over 6,000 branches since 2015 The biggest banks in the UK have closed over 6,000 branches since 2015. Barclays has closed the most, having shut down 1,199 sites. NatWest comes in second, with 854 sites shutting in the same period, followed by Lloyds Bank (747 closures) and HSBC (743). Santander has shut down 477, RBS has closed 453, and 423 TSB branches have closed – as have 277 Virgin Money sites. Halifax and The Co-operative Bank have shut 241 and 170 sites, respectively. Many of the banks say that the closures are due to customers switching to online banking. Critics have voiced concern that closing sites risks cutting off elderly customers and vulnerable groups from their finances. " We are being herded in a very bad direction here.
