"Renewable ammonia is an important part of the decarbonization puzzle, however developing it at scale takes time. As the world is rapidly approaching 2030, we are also working to produce low-carbon ammonia with CCS to enable the hydrogen economy and develop the emerging markets for low-emission ammonia," says Hans-Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia.   Last week, we celebrated the inauguration of our 24 MW renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya Industrial Park in Porsgrunn. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who was with us at the project's launch two years ago, returned to witness its realization. 🌿 Once fully operational, this plant will produce around 20,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually, cutting 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the site. As the largest facility of its kind in Europe, it plays a crucial role in enhancing production whilst cutting emissions. 🌍🎯 We recognize that scaling up production won’t be easy. The recent Australian budget represents a significant stride towards a diversified renewable fuel landscape in Australia. We've long advocated for moving beyond just renewable electricity to achieve ambitious net-zero targets. The government's commitment to developing a Guarantee of Origin (GO) scheme for hydrogen, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is definitely a celebrated development. Certificate mechanisms like GOs are crucial, providing much-needed transparency and accountability in the low-carbon fuel market. Companies are often hesitant to shoulder the burden of verifying their own green claims, and GOs offer a standardized solution. However, I can't help but express a measured disappointment at the omission of biomethane from this initial focus. Biomethane offers a mature and readily available technology with significant potential for decarbonizing the transport and gas sectors. Its inclusion in the GO scheme enables more cost-effective decarbonization for gas users, maintaining the competitiveness of Australian industries. The budget represents a positive step forward, but there's still room for a more comprehensive approach. The transition will require a mixture of different low-carbon fuel types and trying to force the system to converge toward hydrogen prematurely could risk reducing competitiveness for industries and raise the overall cost of living the people.

Maersk (Maersk) and Equinor have signed an agreement securing supply of green methanol for Maersk’s landmark, new methanol-enabled feeder vessel during its initial months of operation from September 2023 and into the first half of 2024. The agreement ensures green methanol supply for the ship from its entry into operation on a loop from Northern Europe into the Baltic Sea. The biomethanol is produced from biogas from manure. The biogas is upgraded to biomethane and injected into the existing gas grid and the methanol is produced from the biomethane in the grid on a mass-balance basis. The existing European biogas certificate system is used to trace the attributes of the biomethane to the biomethanol and safeguard against double-claims. This way, green methanol can be produced in existing facilities using existing infrastructure and plants enabling a quick route to market.  https://lnkd.in/ggvMFYjy

Well, for the first time, the synthetic hydrocarbon fuel ( e-fuel) made from zero GHG emission feedstocks ( green hydrogen, captured carbon) is commercially available. Currently the manufacturing cost of the e- fuel produced from this plant is Euro 50/litre, a far cry from the current fossil gasoline pumping price in the range of Euro 1-3/litre. Even environmentalists concede that "making e-fuels for road transport would be an unacceptable waste of renewable electricity” and very expensive.". Given alternative fuels with promised zero GHG emission are too energy wasting and expensive for land transportation, how would it be commercially viable for the e-fuels to be used in shipping industry where only the cheapest form of fuels is used traditionally? After halting work on biofuel plant in Rotterdam, 🇳🇱 The Netherlands, and booking a $1bn write down, Shell has also pulled out of e-SAF project planned with state-owned 🇸🇪 Swedish power utility company Vattenfall. “Vattenfall and Shell have decided to pause their collaboration in the HySkies electrofuel project while Vattenfall continues the search for new partners,” said Vattenfall in a statement. The joint project, with the planned capex of €780m ($845m), was launched in 2021 with initial plans to produce 82,000 tonnes of e-SAF and 9,000 tonnes of renewable diesel per annum. The project envisaged the use of hydrogen from 200MW electrolysis plant, biogenic CO2 captured from a waste-to-energy plant and sustainable ethanol as feedstocks at the site. It was due to begin operations in March of 2027. On the other hand, the company said that it will also not avail financial support via the EU Innovation Fund, considering it is infeasible for the project to succeed within the framework of that agreement and aiming to free up funds for others to use in their ambitions to decarbonise. Vattenfall-Shell e-SAF project was awarded €80.2mn ($87mn) grant in January 2023.
