Most people’s understanding of addiction is wrong. Addiction is about poverty. It’s about trauma. It’s about children not being kept safe when they should have been. It’s about discrimination of already marginalised people. For many, it’s an adaptive response to the horrors of what life has served them. When people who want help for their alcohol and drug use come to First Step, we welcome them with love and care. And then wrap around them a team of GPs, nurses, psychologists, psycho-social workers, nurse practitioners, case workers, mental health nurses and lawyers. One team. For free. At one site. We are the only service of this kind in Australia, however receive NO state government funding for the delivery of our health service. Today is our annual fundraising day and three big-hearted donors are going to match every donation that comes in today. The New #KinderCharacterChallenge: Send Valentines to Children's Hospital Put a smile on a child at Children's Hospital this Valentine's Day. If you go to their website, https://buff.ly/3UsFkDQ you can send a valentine to a patient. On the form, choose your valentine, and it will be printed and given to a child in the hospital. It takes about 30 seconds, and it's FREE. Once you submit it, you are presented with an option to donate. The card printer is matching donations, and again, the donation is optional. No deadline was listed for when they will stop accepting valentines, but the sooner, the better. There are many children's hospitals that are doing this, so if you have additional time, try another. Just use your favorite search engine to find Valentines for Children's Hospitals. Some allow you to write a personal message (Cincinnati does not). Research indicates supporting the entire family during a child’s critical illness can improve resilience, reduce stress and enhance wellbeing for several crucial reasons: ✅  Emotional Well-Being: A child’s illness affects the entire family - parents, siblings, and extended family members experience stress, anxiety, and fear. ✅  Practical Assistance: Supporting the whole family enables the sharing of responsibilities to alleviate the daily burden of families managing critical illnesses. ✅ Financial Strain: Community resources, counselling, and financial aid can ease the burden of medical expenses. ✅ Sibling Support: Emotional support for siblings of critically ill children can ease related disruption and anxiety. ✅ Parental Health: Support for parents to assist in the maintenance of their own physical and mental health can assist in the provision of better care. ✅ Family Dynamics: Critical illnesses strain family relationships. Open communication, counselling, and support groups can help maintain healthy dynamics and ease the strain on family relationships. ✅ Child’s Recovery: Improved positive health outcomes have been linked to the provision of a supportive family environment.
