Last week, the Artemis Ward team had the chance to meet with leadership at Baltimore's Lexington Market, one of the oldest public markets in America (opened in 1782), followed by an inspiring conversation about the market's role as a community hub and civic asset in the heart of the city. A few big takeaways: 1). Civic spaces like Lexington Market operate best when observation, listening, and dialogue are constant and ongoing between leadership, vendors, and visitors. 2). While the vendors are there to turn a profit, the market is there to serve the community and preserve the public's trust. 3). Lexington Market knows who its community is and every decision the market's leadership makes is guided by an understanding of how the market can be a welcoming place that enhances their day-to-day lives. There are lessons here for every kind of org, company, or brand: Discovery is an act of listening, observing, and exchanging. Core values should define all decision-making. And the answer you're looking for always lies in your audience. Thanks to Jamal McCord, Jessica Blackwell Parks, and Abigail Lammel for having us in and for showing us what makes Lexington Market such an invaluable part of the Baltimore community. Pioneer Service has been an active member of the Valley Industrial Association of Illinois for many years. From advocacy and legislative representation to networking opportunities and training and development programs, our leadership team (and staff across many departments) have found ongoing benefits to the collaboration and partnership we have found with other members in the organization and the staff of the association. Under Kathy Gilmore’s leadership, an amazing board of directors, and an exceptional team of staff members, this is an important organization for any manufacturer to consider. The Valley Industrial Association (#VIA) turns 122 years this year. Amazingly, It was founded in 1902 – when Teddy Roosevelt was President of the US, the radio was first demonstrated publicly, the first movie theatre opened in LA, the first JC Penny store opened in Wyoming, Target Corp is founded, air conditioning was invented in NYC, Richard Daley was born (Chicago mayor 1965-1971) and Ray Kroc was born (ie McDonalds) – to name a few other notable 1902 facts. Its longevity is a testament to the value it provides to its member companies. The original founding members included sixteen manufacturers in the Aurora area. Members today can be found across Northern IL, including Kane, DuPage, Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kendall, and DeKalb counties. Included in the over 200-member list are industrial companies, manufacturing companies, service providers, and suppliers to the industrial ecosystem across this part of IL. Very timely OpEd by the Crain's Chicago Business editorial board to highlight that we need new business leaders to follow the footsteps of highly civically minded business leaders like Jim Crown and Rocky Wirtz: "They also embodied a tradition that sets Chicago’s business community apart from other major metros: This city expects its business elite to play a role in its civic life, getting big projects like Millennium Park off the ground, contributing to the upkeep of beloved institutions such as the renovation of the Museum of Science & Industry, and helping elected officials to take on giant, seemingly intractable challenges such as combating crime, improving education and creating economic opportunity in the neighborhoods as well as the Loop." As I mentioned in yesterday's post here on LinkedIn, we need a new generation of business leaders who are civically engaged to build a better Chicago across all 77 neighborhoods. A sole focus on generating business growth and profit will not build a more equitable and inclusive region where the opportunities are as equally distributed as the talent already is.

At a recent Vistage Worldwide, Inc. Chair meeting in Huntsville, during which each chair presented an overview of their practice, one statement stood out. Scott Morrow, a fellow chair from Nashville, shared a powerful insight: "One great member/client is going to break your heart at least once per year." This succinct sentence encapsulated a sentiment I've felt but never articulated. Over my more than 30 years as a coach and now chair, I've experienced this phenomenon consistently—annually, a valued member or client exits, and it stirs a mix of emotions. Morrow's words highlighted that the people we collaborate with genuinely matter. The relationships are personal, fostering care and attachment. When these individuals eventually move on, for a variety of reasons, it leaves an emotional impact. It's a realization that these connections aren't just business transactions; they hold profound significance. The Greek philosopher and historian Plutarch once said: if you live with a lame man, soon enough you will walk with a limp. In other words, tell me who you spend time with and I'll tell you who you are. Tell me what you pay attention to and I can tell you the same. Growing up, It's why my parents always wanted to meet my friends. Perhaps unusual thoughts to have while walking on field the other night at Fenway Park for our SALA Series dinner. But we had assembled a remarkable group of leaders around an important topic that too few people are paying attention to: health equity. The notion that everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. A simple concept. And a great failure, especially when considering underserved Black and Brown communities. Let me explain it this way:  if you grow up in the Back Bay of Boston, your life expectancy is 23 years beyond those in Roxbury. On average folks on the Upper East side of Manhattan live to almost 86.  However, those in Brownsville, Brooklyn average just over 75 years.  In Chicago's downtown, individuals can expect to live to 85 years. But those most marginalized on the West Side typically reach just 69.  And so it goes. Hosted by my friend Darren Brown and Newfront, we were fortunate to bring together remarkable leaders like Demond Martin (Co-founder and CEO of WellWithAll), William Curry (Chief Medical Officer, Mass General Hospital) and Yvonne Spicer, EdD (former Mayor, Framingham, Mass. and Executive Director, Life Sciences Cares) who helped lead a broader group discussion that covered both the why (i.e. how we got here) and the what (i.e., where we go from here).  Whether it's public / private partnerships or otherwise, new collaborations will come from the dinner - and we'll push forward both individually and as a group.  However (and assuming we indeed want to realize the equitable society to which so many purportedly aspire), we need to demand much more -- from ourselves, our government and the private sector.  "There are few things in the world as dangerous as sleepwalkers."
