Pelvic Practitioners: Research shows having poor-quality sleep for a few months can lead to or worsen persistent pain. During sleep the brain is cleaned of toxins and waste by-products built up during the day. As we celebrate Pelvic Pain Awareness Month, please encourage your patients to prioritize sleep as a vital self-care method. Neuroscientists at Washington University in St. Louis recently discovered how the CSF clears the brain of toxins during sleep. "Neural networks synchronize individual action potentials to create large-amplitude, rhythmic and self-perpetuating ionic waves" of the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). The energy is strong enough to move small molecules, peptides, or waste products through the tight spaces within brain tissue with varying cycles just like a washing machine! This research seminar aims to present the latest advances in the study of the deleterious effect of intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation in cell cultures and animal models of sleep apnea. Moreover, we will discuss the other indicators of OSA severity that would help stratifying the risk of OSA-associated comorbidities and contribute to the personalized management of these patients.
