The common practice in retail is to sell goods below cost to attract customers. Typically, these are items in the Fresh or Ultra Fresh categories, which cannot be purchased in large quantities and which guarantee that the customers will come back within a few days. For example, at Costco, the cost of a hot dog has remained unchanged for 38 consecutive years - $1.50, whether in 1985 or in 2023. However, considering inflation, the cost of a hot dog now should be $4.08. However, the retail chain offsets such costs by increasing the prices of other items. For instance, the annual membership fee for a Costco card during the same period has increased from $25 to $60 (and for a cashback card - up to $120).

An early Easter could ‘cost’ retailers $1.6 billion in ‘lost’ sales.
Why?
Well, it’s partly because Easter candy is an elastic category. The later Easter falls, the more people tend to buy – because many purchase treats early, consume them, and then buy some more. When Easter falls earlier, that selling window is shorter and consumption falls.
This year, consumer finances are also under more pressure which means a slight trimming at the margins of spending.
Both things will weigh down on spending this year.
Still, Easter sales will top $22 billion this year, so it remains a significant opportunity for retailers.

🛒🔍 **Spot the Difference: Supermarket Edition vs. Client Edition!**
🍌 Supermarket: Buys a banana for 50 pence.
Client: "Can you do 30 pence for that banana?"
🍎 Supermarket: Offers an apple for 70 pence.
Client: "Sounds a bit high. What about 40 pence?"
🍇 Supermarket: Displays grapes for £2.00.
Client: "I was thinking more like £1.00."
If supermarkets operated like client negotiations, we'd all be mastering the art of the discount dance! 😂 But just as every fruit has its value, so does every service. Remember, you get what you pay for - and sometimes that's a top-quality banana! 🍌🌟

Post 37 - One of my favorite things to do is after a holiday is to go to the store and buy the holiday candy when its 50% off. Its still the same candy, just a day or two older than it was yesterday (lets not kid ourselves, it is still as good/fresh as it was the day before and will be the same the day after that).
What is brilliant about this though is, the store is getting what they want out of this too, and they're likely still turning a profit on the sale. Sure, it is not as big of a profit, and if a store is desperate they may sell the product at a loss to get it off the shelves because other stuff on the shelves would likely be more profitable, but they're still making money off of me. I'm still choosing to go to the store and buy that thing rather than spending my money elsewhere.
The lesson of this is, discounts and deals are meant to make you buy things that you may not have purchased at full price. You're still giving them your money, so who's winning in the scenario?

So shopping for boneless skinless chicken thighs this past week for an event (I needed 80 Lbs, in addition to 145 Lbs of bone-in Butts). Sam’s Club which is supposed to offer good deals to vendors like me had them at $3.48 per Lb. Same as Walmart (store brand). Restaurant Depot had them for $1.78 per Lb. (40 Lb boxes). The Boston Butts were $1.98 per Lb at Sam’s (even higher at Walmart) but got them for $1.29 per Lb on special at Harris Teeter and a few of $0.99 per Lb with e-VIC membership. The best everyday price for Butts is Restaurant Depot usually around $1.59 per Lb. for when I can’t find them on a sale. PS- cancelling my Costco membership because they don’t carry what I need (only boneless butts which I hate to use and no longer carry Prime briskets) or prices too high on the few items I can use.
Thankfully I have apps for stores like HT and Food Lion to show me when sales occur. It’s a jungle out there folks, shopping for best prices. The same with all the other commodities I use in my small business. Yes, prices are up but do your homework before you shop. Let’s fight inflated inflation.

Costco is well-known as a place to get bargain prices on any variety of items, from food to luggage to appliances to gold bars.
Wait, gold bars?
Yes, the retail warehousing giant is your one-stop shop for 1 ounce gold PAMP Suisse Lady Fortuna Veriscan bars, handsomely detailed and ready for purchase.
They’re available for the bargain price of … well, you have to be a member to know that, but apparently they were selling for a little shy of $1,900 recently, according to chatter on Reddit. Spot gold most recently was going for $1,876.56 an ounce as of Wednesday afternoon.
Regardless of the price, gold is selling like hotcakes, judging by comments Tuesday from Costco Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti. Speaking on the company’s quarterly earnings call, Galanti said the bars are in hot demand and don’t last long when in stock.
“I’ve gotten a couple of calls that people have seen online that we’ve been selling 1 ounce gold bars,” he said. “Yes, but when we load them on the site, they’re typically gone within a few hours, and we limit two per member.”
A couple of important points from that thought: The bars indeed are only available online, and only if you’re a Costco member, which costs either $120 or $60 a year, depending on which program you pick. The retailer also is limiting the purchases to two to a customer, meaning it would be pretty hard to build a position that would lead to financial security.
Costco seems to have accelerated its offerings of dried foods and other survivalist goods at a time when worries about the future are running high. For example, the company markets a 150-serving emergency food preparedness kit that could come in handy, you know, just in case. Gold meshes with that type of product.

What are DARK STORES? - (and how they are impacting Quick delivery competition?)
In My opinion- Stores where, rather than you are going and buying a chocolate of Rs10, you are paying Rs15. to a kid (delivery boy) to go to a shop (Dark store) and bring the chocolate for you.
Imagine now there are so many dark stores for quick delivery of 10 minutes, and if there would be a lot of them (near our houses) in future for quicker delivery, why those cannot be converted as real shops, and people can just go there and buy, rather than asking a delivery boy to go and pick up things for you.
