Indian’s whisky love is coming home. Human beings love stories. We are swayed by stories. We like #brands that speak our language. We want brands that relate to our culture, taste, and sensibilities. Not so long ago, Scotch whiskies used to dominate in #India. Then came Irish and Japanese whiskies. Now Indians are increasingly consuming homegrown brands. Indian single malts are leaving foreign brands behind. The sales of Indri, an Indian single malt, grew by 5x in 2023. It sold more than 100,000 cases (each case is 12 bottles of 750 ml) last year. This is impressive. Globally there are just a handful of single malts that sell 500,000+ cases annually (Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Macallan, Singleton, and Glenlmorangie). They are all iconic brands with hundreds of years of history. For a new Indian brand to sell 100,000 cases is no mean feat. The new elites like Indian stuff, at least in whisky. Now we must find an exotic Indian word to toast like Slainte Mhath (slan-ge-var) in Scotland. Something like Chak De.

EXCLUSIVE: This was an interesting story to write, and it did come in as a surprise. It’s the coming of age of Indian single malt makers, and just how. In just a decade-and-a-half of their journey, Indian brands such as Amrut, Rampur, Indri, Paul John and Gianchand have pipped some of the world’s most hallowed brands like Glenlivet, Talisker, Lagavulin and Macallan in sales. And mind you: the Indian brands are not priced cheap, in many cases they are at par with the Scottish brands. The maturity of the spirit is faster in India due to the hot weather, and it interacts more richly with the wooden barrels. The comment of one of Amrut’s top management is apt, “It’s not everyday that such a feat is achieved. Once upon a time in India, the spirits Industry was divided into two major groups controlled by the Mallyas and the Chhabrias and the competition existed in price segments which were defined as regular / prestige /premium & super premium. There were the speciality brands in Rum & Brandy. But for decades time stood still. The label for good spirits was given to difficult to afford ‘foreign’ brands. This has now given way to unique flavour infused craft Gins, smooth vodkas , artisanal ciders . Imagine a Single Malt Whisky which has a pineapple-drop candy sweetness, carried hand-in-hand by barley and a firm vanilla backbone softened by thin oils that ensure the tannin build. And it is Made in India ! Today, the new variety of Indian Made Premium Spirits which stand out for their unique blends and excellent packaging stand tall when compared to international vintage favourites. No wonder then that the market of US$29.8bn in 2024 ( as per Statista ) grows vibrantly with change in the mix shown with a growing flavour presence through Gin, Liqueur and other speciality spirits.
