Yesterday, I had the honor of testifying before the House Ways and Means Committee on Capitol Hill to advocate for child welfare reform. Speaking on behalf of children whose voices often go unheard, I shared my own experiences and those of many others who have suffered abuse in youth residential treatment facilities. Despite the trauma and severe PTSD I endured, I am committed to turning my pain into purpose by ensuring no child experiences the same. Our discussion focused on strengthening child welfare programs and advocating for the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act to create transparency and prevent abuse.

You have such amazing inner strength to speak out about the child abuse you suffered! We so need to bring more global awareness about this sensitive topic and learn to speak openingly about child abuse & child sexual abuse within our communities & our social media platforms! So our children, know they can speak out and seek the help they need. We need to stop this heinous crimes. I am a survivor of historical child sexual abuse & rapes.

Thank you for your courage and your commitment to the thousands of children who remain confined inside these facilities. Your promise to them means so very much: “If you are a child in the system, hear my words: I see you. I believe you. I know what you’re going through, and I won’t give up on you.” Your words are what every child in the system needs to hear and trust. You have given them something to hold onto. You have given them what has been taken from them, hope. The Child Abuse Act must pass. These places must stop operating as they have for decades, in the dark. Thank you.

Thank you Paris as a lobbyist on these issues, I just want to virtually hug you for making my job that much easier to raise the awareness this needs so that people truly understand what is going on. Profit prevails in child welfare more so than the welfare of children. Creating atrocity after atrocity and deep trauma of heartbreaking stories. They are so inhumane one cannot begin to understand the pain this creates in so many families.

Paris, I’ve seen firsthand how selflessly you lend your time, money, and energy to bring joy into the world each and every day. So it’s not terribly surprising — but incredible nonetheless — you’re using your spotlight to make the world more kind and loving for all kids. You’re a masterclass in humanity … taking a private, painful part of your journey … one I know you’d rather not revisit … wrestling with it and making your pain so public … to use your powerful voice to add credibility, and amplification to the previously voiceless victims … making sure others believe the stories of those previously deemed unbelievable … and bringing together politicians from both sides of the aisle to advocate for and demand child welfare reform. I wish you hadn’t experienced the pain and trauma you’ve had to endure and relive… but I’m beyond proud of how you’ve channeled that into action on behalf of others. Thank you for making the world a brighter place … staring down and defeating the darkness. You’re an incredible force for good. Phoenix and London are so lucky to have you as their mom. The kids of the world lucky to have you as their champion. And the powerless so lucky to have you as their source of inspiration and protection.

I hope your voice moves some folks to action. In New Jersey, one of the laws our organization is trying to get support for is the Ombudsman Act. We would like to see an unbiased representative and an Ombudsman assigned to children's cases. This person is not connected to the state or the foster care system; it is a person who works directly with the child to ensure their voice is heard. An ombudsman helps ensure the child's questions are answered, that resources for support are identified and accessed, and that information about policies that impact them that align with many things in your speech are accessible to ensure the safety and well-being of those in care. Ombudsmen can be found assigned to people with disabilities, the elderly, and yet our most vulnerable population, youth in foster care and youth adopted, who could benefit from welfare checks and timely reports with recommendations don't have someone in this capacity to support them. Let's see where all this goes.

You are a warrior princess. You have grace and you are articulate and clear. You are not vulnerable or a victim, you are a survivor and you are educating everyone around you for a better future. For children and parents. I’m proud of you as a woman, and a mother.
