Last week, Lawrence University's team members from the Career Center and Center for Community Engagement & Social Change (CCE) shared with the Winter Athletic Teams all of the amazing career development resources, community service opportunities, and various funding programs that we continuously offer to student-athletes to help prepare them for Life After Lawrence! As the data slowly rolls in, we had over 120 athletes attend these presentations, with over 90% confidently demonstrating the ability to locate the Career Center on campus. Most importantly, attendees shared they felt more confident in finding or applying for funded internships or volunteer opportunities. …such a substantive conversation today with TWC President Kimberly Churches, aimed at amplifying the connection and collaboration between Miami Dade College (MDC) and The Washington Center (TWC). For over a decade, The Honors College at Miami Dade College students and other scholars, with the mentorship of our world class professors, have travelled to the Capitol to participate in the immersive Inside Washington convening of engaged learners, faculty, and public/private sector officials. Internships are a crucial part of a public policy education; look no further that Olivia Soolman, Public Policy '27, as an example of that. Olivia was a Policy and Advocacy intern at RCAP Solutions, a non-profit community development organization based in Worcester, MA. During her internship, Olivia used her writing skillset to work on local policy issues, including water quality and maternal health in Massachusetts, and her experience writing in her undergraduate courses helped make the transition to applied policy work that much easier: "Having already written policy papers for Controversies in Public Policy and Public Policy, I felt very prepared to thoroughly research a policy topic and write a white paper for my internship." For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken." Hi friends! It’s my birthday! Looking for a way to commemorate this momentous occasion?! I hope you support my nonprofit -- Florida Community Innovation! At FCI, we empower young innovators to build things that make Florida better, like the Florida Community Resource Map (connecting people to food banks, job resources, and more), an anti-human trafficking training certification, an environmental sustainability messaging campaign, and more. I think what makes us different is that (1) we build our projects with communities and we iterate + research to make sure we're building solutions that actually work and (2) we put young leaders at the center of our work. Trust me — we couldn’t be working harder to serve people across Florida. Today alone, I met with awesome friends and colleagues from the Mount Dora Community Trust, the Holden Heights community, and Save Miami — all for inspiring, “Save the World” tech projects built by and with our students. We've worked with a few universities now, and the money I'm specifically trying to raise this birthday is for our University of Florida internship program. This program is special. I'm trying to raise enough money now to completely fund all the students this fall, who are enrolled in in an internship class and/or working for us. They get course credit AND get paid for meaningful work!! When we started this program, we were trying to give first generation college students and other students who may not normally have access to tech internships a chance -- to find paid work that actually moves their career goals forward, while helping Florida at the same time. These students inspire me everyday. They come up with innovative ideas, they work hard, and they truly have hearts for service. It'd mean the world if you could support us! We have more students each year who are interested than we can afford to pay, and with public service, the more, the merrier. Support us and be a part of the change you want to see!! All-In Cincinnati is actively executing our 5-year strategic plan, currently, 90% complete, focusing on the PAYING aspect as a crucial part of our youth advocacy efforts mentioned in the March City Council Meeting. This push for paid internships and apprenticeship programs is in the #economicmobility strategies outlined in our plan. We aim to provide young Black girls in Hamilton County with the necessary resources for their growth and success. Our Immediate Goal: We’re actively seeking partnerships with local community organizations and business owners who offer paid internships and apprenticeship programs. Our focus is on creating tangible opportunities that not only provide financial support but also nurture the potential and aspirations of our young Black girls. Today, a new report from the Center for an Urban Future and The Bronx Community Foundation outlines actionable proposals from 50 influential Bronxites to enhance the borough's economic and social landscape. One notable idea, originating from our Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, is the creation of a year-long internship or work-study program for CUNY students in the Bronx. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between academia and practical experience while bolstering economic development and opportunities for Bronx residents. The report underscores the Bronx's pivotal role in New York City's economy, highlighting its substantial job growth and the imperative to address persistent challenges in affordability and access to essential services for its residents.
