International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) develops the science based resources collaboratively with clinicians, researchers and people with lived experience to point all of our efforts at outcomes that matter to the patient. Standardizing what and how we measure improvement in clinical and life quality is an essential building block of building the bridge between research and practice.

Experiences and opinions of general practitioners with patient online record access: an online survey in England https://lnkd.in/eZXVFh5J Objective: To explore the experiences and opinions of general practitioners (GPs) in England about patients having full online access to their GP health records. Design: Online survey with a convenience sample of 400 registered GPs in England. Main findings: A minority of GPs (33%) believed online record access (ORA) was a good idea. Most GPs believed a majority of patients would worry more, find their records more confusing than helpful, contact them with more questions, and increase their litigation risk after ORA. However, most GPs also believed a majority of patients would better remember their care plan, feel more in control of their care, and find significant errors in their records after ORA. Conclusions: GPs in England were sceptical of ORA, but also recognised some benefits for patients. The findings contrast with studies in other countries that show patients derive multiple benefits from ORA. Further research is needed to explore both GPs’ and patients’ experiences with ORA in England.

With more than half of physicians now employed by health systems, it is vital that we position these groups for success. This means improving on core operational aspects, and then positioning them to deliver on continuity of care and clinical outcomes, while realizing better patient and provider experiences. This is the first of series wherein we will share some perspectives on the path forward for system-based medical groups, and the key role they will play in the care we all rely on.

A new Physicians Advocacy Institute and Avalere report finds hospitals, health systems and corporate entities now employ more than three-quarters of U.S. physicians and own 58.5% of medical practices. Notably, for the first time, corporate entities own a greater share of practices (30.1%) than do hospitals and health systems (28.4%). “Corporate entities are assuming control of physician practices and changing the face of medicine in the United States with little to no scrutiny from regulators. Physicians have an ethical responsibility to their patients’ health. By contrast, corporate entities have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders and are motivated to put profits first. The medical practice landscape is changing rapidly. Avalere's study for the Physicians Advocacy Institute reveals that 77.6% of US physicians are employed by hospitals, health systems, or corporate entities as of January 2024. That's over 44,000 practices acquired since 2019. Corporate ownership is now surpassing hospital ownership, raising important questions about patient care and ethical responsibilities.
