As we enter July 4th weekend, celebrating freedom, America, and of course, grilled meat, take a few minutes to read about another country that also loves freedom and meat: Denmark. In this excellent Bloomberg News feature, Sanne Wass takes a look at the country's gentle but overt approach to get Danes to eat less meat. Chefs are trying new things. A college is developing a degree specifically in vegetarian cooking. Plant-based cooking will be featured at a summer music festival. And it's all supported by the government's $100 million Plant Fund. Importantly, there are no bans, there are no restrictions, and the words "vegetarian" and "vegan" are avoided on the projects. Livestock produces an estimated 14.5% of man-made global greenhouse gas emissions, plus takes a toll on land and water resources. Clearly, it's an area ready for improvement. How a short walk and a conversation with a vendor at a farmers' market, can help inspire fundamental transformational change throughout a city. 🏗🥕 It’s real now.  The announcement was made. The dignitaries and media assembled and left. The hoarding is up. Skilled women and men now toil within the bowels of the arena to make it the epi-centre of live music in Canada. Not Toronto or Montreal or Vancouver. (They likely won't bother reading this news if they see it at all). Its the City Of Hamilton.  But the greatest takeaway yesterday was not reported.  It hasn’t been spoken of that I’ve noticed.  But I heard it from Tim Leiweke and Tom Pistore and Josh Epstein of the Oak View Group.  An anecdote that Tim relayed at his formal remarks at the arena that was followed by a remarkable commitment. A commitment he repeated yesterday evening at a wonderful celebration hosted by another venerable community institution, The Hamilton Club. It goes something like this. As Tim was walking back from the arena announcement to the Hamilton Club he walked through our wonderful Farmers' Market. He talked with venders. And, in a moment of inspiration, summonsed his leadership team to come over.  They talked with our hard working small business people about their work and products.  And a thought took root which Tim passionately communicated last night.   As an organization committed to positive impact, working with partners like HUPEG, sharing a resolve to steward the transformation of our downtown, what if the Oak View Group and Live Nation Entertainment and its partners prioritized procuring food from the Hamilton Farmers' Market? Set aside for a moment the prospect of having the world’s greatest musical acts appear in our city.  And reflect on the impact to these small businesses and their families of this facility committing to procure from them?   This from one short walk and and an accidental collision. Now imagine a comprehensive long term sustainable focus on broad based community impact from this massive 'seed investment' and the follow on investments and commercial activity it will catalyze, supplemented and supported by local leaders and involving every ward in our city. Actually there is no need to imagine it. Because we’ve created it. It’s called the The Commons.  If this is what comes from the short walk of one brilliant business leader, just think of what will come from the countless future walks, conversations and inspirations of the many other credentialed and aspirational business leaders to follow?? And as importantly, all the rest of us from every walk of life aspiring to help create a better city. This is the POWER of a vibrant, dynamic, business environment. The collisions and innovations that it spawns. And of business leaders - small, medium and large - who grind everyday to make things better. Introducing the Small Beer Brew Co. Their aim as a sustainable brewery is never to waste a drop. This includes drastically cutting the water needed to brew beer; meaning they have saved more than 6.5 million litres of water across six years AND also inspired change across the industry. Plus they clean their brewery with recovered heat and water and they donate a % of their revenue to Horniman Museum and Gardens in South London.
