I want to express my condolences to the Simons family regarding the passing of Jim Simons. I never met Jim Simons but his philanthropy supported my research, [through my advisor] including the fantastic Simons Toc for Fairness program and being privileged to visit the Simons Institute in Berkeley. I have met fantastic collaborators and friends through both programs and been inspired to pursue exciting and in my opinion, socially important AI research. Both programs have incubated an amazing research ecosystem, which is in my opinion, unique in the theoretical computer science community, and enables long term, blue skies socially beneficial research. My first paper with Avrim was in the FORC conference, Foundations of Responsible Computing, which is enabled and funded through the collaboration. I know I wouldn't have met Juba Ziani without the Toc For Fairness, among many many others. So, here's to Jim Simons.

After a year of anticipation, a top-rated international journal within "Indersciences--Publisher" finally published my paper. I have been reviewing their paper, research paper with inderscience journals in-depth computer science and technology journals for many years now and will continue to do so. My next contribution to Adversarial Attacks on machine learning models, especially image classification models, will be presented at the 5th International Conference on Distributed Computing and Machine Learning (ICADCML'24). The conference will be organized by the VIT-AP University in collaboration with the San Diego State University, USA, in a hybrid mode from January 5-6, 2024. The work investigates how the architecture of a distillation-based CNN can be made robust (but not fully secure) against the fast gradient sign method (FGSM) attack. The paper will be published in Springer's "Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems (LNNS)" Book series. Big news! Avi Wigderson just snagged the Turing Award, aka the "Nobel Prize of Computer Science"! Coming from Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, he's been honored for his revolutionary insights into computational theory and randomness in computing. Born in Haifa and a grad from both the Israel Institute of Technology and Princeton, he's been rocking the computational complexity world since '99. From uncovering why some probs are just naturally slow-pokes on machines to pioneering randomness, Wigderson is a true leader in theoretical computer science!

He is a Scientist in the Computer Information and Systems Laboratory at the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research. He co-leads a research group that focuses on improving the ability of large-scale geoscience applications to utilize current and future computing platforms. His research interests include parallel algorithm and compiler optimization, graph partitioning, and data-intensive computing. ABSTRACT: An institution-wide team was formed to determine the best course of action concerning using exascale technology to advance NSF NCAR's science objectives. The end product of this evaluation was the creation of both a general and laboratory-specific set of recommendations regarding how exascale technology can advance our science objectives. In our presentation, we describe science objectives that are potentially of interest to the RAL community that can benefit from the use of exascale technology. We also provide both NSF NCAR-wide and laboratory-specific recommendations to advance the RAL community's use of exascale technologies.

The recent initiative by Google Research, FireBench, exemplifies the integration of high-performance computing (HPC) and machine learning (ML) to address complex environmental phenomena, specifically wildfires. FireBench leverages HPC to enhance the predictive capabilities and efficacy of ML models in wildfire research, thereby advancing our understanding and mitigation strategies. This interdisciplinary endeavor highlights the transformative potential of ML in environmental science, opening new avenues for both computational advancements and practical applications in wildfire management.
