It's the middle of summer but you're not feeling so hot...could you be experiencing the symptoms of a tick-borne disease? It’s not uncommon to experience symptoms of a virus or flu-like illness—the early hallmark of a tick-borne disease—without noticing a tick bite or even the bullseye rash that is sometimes associated with a tick bite. Lyme disease is the most common vectorborne disease in the US, but it’s not as pervasive as media publicity would lead you to believe. It is an acute bacterial infection transmitted by 2 species of ticks, and 95% of all cases occur in a cluster of states in the northeast and Midwest. In other parts of the country, it is near impossible to get Lyme disease, because the conditions don’t exist. Unfortunately, misinformation has plagued this illness for decades, and it leads to excess anxiety. In reality, proactive tick-bite prevention measures can be really effective at substantially reducing your risk, even in parts of the country that Lyme is endemic. It's important for you and your family to be tick free! Ticks can spread disease. Not all ticks can cause disease and not all bites will make you sick, but as these diseases become more common it's important to learn how to prevent a bite, how to remove a tick and what to do if you think you could have a tick-borne disease. Lyme disease is the most common disease spread by ticks in New York but there are other serious diseases transmitted by ticks including babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, hard tick relapsing fever and Powassan encephalitis. https://lnkd.in/eXVtRXSb

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning to doctors to be on the look out for cases of dengue. A surge in dengue cases globally is raising the risk that people could catch the disease in the US. The number of people who develop the mosquito-borne disease has been increasing globally as the world’s climate warms due to the climate crisis. The number of global infections in 2024 have been the highest on record, according to the CDC. Cases in the Americas have already exceeded the highest number ever recorded in a single year, with more than 9.7 million people getting sick with dengue; that’s twice as many cases in all of 2023. Generally, dengue had been relatively rare in the continental US with most people getting sick after having traveled to popular destinations overseas where the disease is more common. So far this year, a higher-than-expected number of dengue cases have been identified among US travelers, with 745 cases reported from January 1 through June 24. Here's the latest: https://lnkd.in/evhVy5TT

Dogs aren’t the only ones that can get ticks this time of year - people do too. And if a human is bitten by an infected black-legged tick, the result can be Lyme Disease. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic “bulls eye” skin rash called erythema migrans. Although most cases of Lyme disease can be cured with a 2- to 4-week course of oral antibiotics, patients can sometimes have symptoms that linger for months up to years. The best course of action if you are concerned about the early stages of a tick bite is to come immediately to Allegro Family Clinic to be evaluated and monitored. Use insect repellent with DEET to significantly reduce the chance of tick bites and the transmission of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.

* Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that can cause smallpox-like illness in humans, although named after monkeys because it was first discovered in Cynomolgus monkeys it is primarily found in rodents (tree squirrels in sub-saharan Africa) as a potential reservoir. * Though a pretty rare disease, monkeypox can cause severe illness in humans, with symptoms including fever, headache, muscle aches, and a rash that often progresses to pustules and scabs. The disease can be fatal in some cases, particularly among people with weakened immune systems. * The monkeypox virus gains entry into the host via the skin, respiratory tract or mucous membranes. To prevent the spread of monkeypox, public health officials recommend measures such as avoiding contact with animals that may carry the virus, practicing good hygiene and getting vaccinated if appropriate. * Early detection and rapid response are also important in containing outbreaks of the disease. *NB; Ensure to watch the video to end in order to view pictures of classical monkeypox lesions.#monkeypox#zoonoses#publichealth#onehealth#wildlife
