Had quite an experience earlier on the radio side of WHYY in membership breaks. We had a challenge—a HUGE challenge: 500 pledges & then the William Penn Foundation would give us $475,000. We got over 600 & the money. #WHYY #CCA #PhilaFCC #PBS @patrickstoner

A United Way Of Fuel Efficiency The destination is clear. It’s a stretch to think it’s achievable, but others continue to contribute money for fuel to make it a reality. The best odds to reach the destination requires external expertise and vehicles from those best equipped to navigate the challenging terrains. The United Way of Cass-Clay (UWCC) is about to share the money for fuel with other non-profits equipped to reach their shared goals. Every year, local non-profits apply for grants from United Way to support their programs. The programs align with the UWCC’s mission, values, and strategic goals. Solutions that will have the biggest, long-term impact will receive grants. The tag team approach is a unique and efficient operating model. I’m reminded of the old African proverb ‘if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ The destination doesn’t seem like such a stretch anymore.

I cannot underscore how important this message is enough. Our nonprofits are not being supported as our society needs them to be. We know the answer: more funding for operational or administrative support... yet over and over, funders are unwilling to support anything that remotely resembles 'general support.' Why are those holding the purse strings uncomfortable fully funding the nonprofits they propose to support? Perhaps, once they understand their own motivations for withholding vital resources, they will be more open to change.
Last week I attended the screening of Dan Pallotta's #Uncharitable. The film's message of how the For Impact sector is deliberately hamstrung in its efforts to advance positive change resonated strongly. As Darren Walker stated in the film: "It is both ignorant and arrogant to give money to a project you care about and not care about the infrastructure of this project." Thank you Ellen Sax for organizing this screening in the Capital Region and thank you to the panelists. Adding to excellent take-aways shared by Winsome Foderingham, MPA, I wanted to share this insightful video: "Bake a Difference" by Voice for Social Good about the importance of operational funding (Thank you Deepali Khanna!) I see the importance of operational funding every day at United Way of the Greater Capital Region, where we have long provided unrestricted operational funding to our community partners. Our partners speak to how it unlocks their creative potential, allows them to leverage other more restrictive funds, and invest in ideas with transformative potential.
