Did you know there are more museums in the US than Starbucks and McDonalds combined? 🍟 ☕ And one of the uncovered truths about all these museums? They have quite the carbon footprint 👣 According to Museums Galleries Scotland, a museum's main areas of emissions are: 💡 Energy usage 📦 Collection management, storage and care 🚮 Waste management It makes sense when you think about it - I think of my curator friend who's often jetsetting around the globe with high-worth exhibition pieces for showcasing at various top museums. While museums can be 'like a small city', there are numerous ways to manage their emissions. Which is where international nonprofit organisation Ki Culture comes in. Ki Culture believes that museums are uniquely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and so helps museum staff rethink and redesign their systems. While museums are treasure troves of history, culture, and art, they also have a role to play in pursuing sustainability. What's your favourite museum? #art #climate #sustainability

// "Museums must fully play their role in the ecological debate" // Today sustainability was a core subject at CTA in paris. An article from the French newspaper Le Monde (17. December 2023) was the kick of for the day. 🌱 Faced with climate change and at the end of COP28 museums, institutions anchored in the life of the city, are at a turning point in their history, forced to reinvent their modes of action. Reducing the museum's carbon footprint becomes essential. This subject has an impact on conservation standards, the travel of staff and visitors etc. Beyond that, it is essential to question the spirit of the place: what is a museum? What bases and validates its public action? What can be its contribution to ecological issues? 🏛️🌍 Read the article here and comment what your opinion is! https://lnkd.in/eszZRb82 #sustainability #museums #cta28 #CTAParis

This is an attempt to get an overview of the different ways that museums can respond to the Earth crisis. It’s structured around three pillars: truth-telling, care-taking and change-making. I wanted to use these pillars to focus on museums, rather than culture in general, and to represent what I’ve seen some doing already, rather than to exhort them to start doing these things. In each pillar, there is an essential / expected area of action and an extension that we should start to see more of as the Earth crisis unfolds. #regenerativemuseums #CultureTakesAction #MuseumsForFuture https://lnkd.in/ed2T_BcW

Long-term thinking, and the concept of #sustainability, often feels to me like 'looking ahead'. What about looking back? Welcome this news from UK #museum leaders. With collections relating to the Earth’s five previous mass extinction events, leaders say they have 'an ethical obligation to take action' in the midst of the #anthropocene - the sixth mass extinction. The stories museums tell connect us to a sense of time, place and belonging. I love the potential of this to help us engage with the #climatecrisis with less fear and more imagination. https://lnkd.in/ezUW5rFn

#HollandFestival #FelixMeritis An afternoon that dives deep into the topic of climate justice through an intersectional lens, with a presentation by artist, curator and art director Georgina Johnson, a panel discussion with choreographer Ana Pi (The Divine Cypher) and Kyu Choi (artistic director Seoul Performing Arts Festival), workshops, film and performance. Dymphie Braun will be host of the event. programme: Presentation Georgina Johnson Panel Discussion with Ana Pi and Kyu Choi Break out: 1: Film screening: I Am the River, the River is Me 2: Workshop: Decolonizing art & earth by Chihiro Geuzebroek 3: Workshop: Water as thought by Weaving Realities Collective This program, made by Holland Festival and Felix Meritis, is an invitation to apply intersectionality to environmentalism and to imagine (artistic) strategies of decolonization within the ecological crisis we find ourselves in. How can we as individuals and (inter)national performing arts festivals take responsibility for decreasing our ecological footprint while also providing space for (internationally) unheard voices? What inequalities do we create or perpetuate, whether wittingly or unwittingly, in the name of sustainability? What role does creativity play in imagining future ecologies and changing current systems? #art #climatejustice #systemchange #creativework #environment #imagination #socialize #confrontation #climatebreakdown #ecocide #genocide #water #decolonize #intersectionality #collective #healing #futurism #ecology #culture #institution #relationshift #powershift https://lnkd.in/eRBvQnqS

The Kennedy Center's international REACH to FOREST festival (February 20–March 3, 2024) explores the symbiotic relationship between forests and the human world with two weeks of free programs, films, art installations, conversations, and more. Forests have nourished humans for millennia. They cover 31% of the Earth’s land area and shelter over 80% of terrestrial biodiversity. More than 1.6 billion people depend on them for their livelihood. We’ve uncovered new dimensions of their wonder, from “forest bathing” to eco-tourism to pharmaceutical research. https://lnkd.in/gi9efJXE
