Core Values of McDonald's! These are the pillars that separate us from the rest. These values are the reason I work for McDonalds today. I will always honor each one everyday. I will put my people first and my guests first, they will always know my door is open, that this is a safe space to fail and a welcoming environment to learn. I will include everyone, no matter who you are or where you have traveled from or the milestones you've had to overcome, you are welcome. The right thing may not always be the easy thing, but what's right will always be top of my mind. Involvement in the community no matter how big or small, from donations to hosting parties to McHappy Day, we are good neighbours. There is not one person who has worked for McDonalds I bet, that can say this is not like a family. You spend a large portion of your life with the people you work with everyday, watching them grow, develop and thrive and you can't help but feel proud of your people. I sometimes forget on the toughest days that these are the staples in all that we do. That we do make a difference in peoples lives and that we have a direct impact on someone's day, everyday. What began as a humble service for a handful of individuals has blossomed into a remarkable lifeline for thousands of families EACH MONTH. Giving Thanks As we gather around the Thanksgiving table this year, or simply take some time off to reflect, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible community initiatives being carried out by our Albertsons Companies brands. In these challenging times, it is more important than ever to come together and show our appreciation for the community that supports us. I want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank our thousands of Albertsons store associates and team members who not only provide essential resources to households, but also create a welcoming sense of belonging and safety. This role becomes even more significant during the holiday season, as customers flock to their local supermarket for special ingredients and engage in uplifting conversations with our store associates. As a supermarket grocer with over 2,000 stores nationwide, Albertsons takes immense pride in its role in the community. Rooted in our commitment to bringing people together around food and promoting well-being, our year-round community efforts have resulted in millions of meals donated. This Thanksgiving, I want to highlight some of the incredible ways that our team members across the country have shown up, both big and small. Giving Back: At a local level, our efforts make a tangible impact. Our Jewel-Osco associates in northern Illinois, for example, recently packed 52,000 Thanksgiving meals for our neighbors in need and even partnered with the Road to Home to provide turkeys for the 10th annual Veterans Turkey Drop at our store on Canal Street in Chicago. In Denver, our local store employees Safeway joined forces to help load frozen turkey donations for the Denver Rescue Mission's annual drive, while Safeway stores in northern California partnered with Kellogg's to donate books to a local children's reading program. In addition, our Nourishing Neighbors charitable program, in partnership with our customers, raised nearly $6 million last month to support community organizations helping individuals access federal meal programs. These efforts not only strengthen our connection to the communities we serve, but also make a real difference in people's lives. Looking Ahead: Looking ahead, we are committed to giving back to our local communities through hands-on initiatives. And with the impending merger with Kroger, we can achieve even greater impact. If approved, the combined company has committed to investing $500 million in reducing prices and $1.3 billion in enhancing the customer experience. These investments will allow us to provide fresher food, better service, and more equitable access to healthy products. Two For The Price Of One Another #FundraisersPerspective from my weekend Walmart run. This one about the importance of brand, a concept often dismissed in the nonprofit world. I went into Walmart for exactly three items: 1) Dishsoap 2) 73% Groundbeef For The Dogs 3) Basil Plants Forgetting ofcourse that we were out of ketchup (I know writing a list is the best way to imprint something on your brain, it doesn't mean I always do it). Nevertheless, Walmart was one of four stops this morning so I was looking forward to getting in and out of the store in a few minutes. As I entered the aisle with dishsoap I instinctively looked for the blue bottle of Dawn and picked it up before making my left to right price psychology discovery and saving $1 on a bottle of Palmolive (read back to my last post for context). I know Dawn and Palmolive are the same thing but but Palmolive is a bottle of dishsoap, Dawn saves baby ducks from oil spills or so Madison Avenue has spent millions to teach me. And that right there is the power of establishing a brand. It's the thing that makes you stop and pause when your brain is occupied by a million other things. For nonprofits, it's the difference between a deleted email and one that get opened or a letter that's thrown in the trash versus one that earns a few seconds of precious attention. As fundraisers, in order to fully appreciate the importance of brand we have to take a step back from the passion of our work and look at our cause through the eyes of a busy mom or dad or grandparent for that matter. There are magnitudes more reasons for your message to be ignored than consumed but brand is the x-factor that gives your appeal a fighting chance. It doesn't win the game, but it earns you a ticket to the dance. And, in a post-pandemic inflation consumed world where donors have become more descerning your brand may be more important than ever. It doesn't matter if you don't like conflating consumerism with philanthropy or how uneasy capitalistic fundraising principles make you. Interesting. That they have more low wage workers that qualify for SNAP suggests that their workforce needs to also rely on their stores to shop. The low cost downstream impact were pointed out at places like fisheries (could have talked about farm workers too). The piece doesn’t mention it, but it’s an easy observation to note that Walmart usually is one of the few grocers in town — if not immediately, then soon thereafter. That means they have driven out those small business owners who may have been more equitable in community wealth sharing wealth and providing living wages. It also means that there would be little opportunities for the workers that they employ to have other options. Is this a new iteration of share cropping? A system where the worker relies on everything from the employer, but is super oppressive to get out of? Definitely makes one wonder.

I've been reflecting on a recent conversation between Walmart's CEO, Doug McMillon, and CPO, Donna Morris, two words Doug pointed out have been resounding in my mind - "opportunity" and "service". Doug described these as his guiding principle for the year ahead and the essence of Walmart respectively.   As I've pondered these words, I've recognized their profound intersection: the opportunity to serve others. This concept, though not new, is a vital component of our roles as servant leaders. As such, we should strive to embody this ethos and seize every chance to serve.   This week's Well-Being Wednesday post is inspired by this theme - finding fulfillment through service to others. As you know, the act of service is beautifully cyclical - as we extend our hands in kindness, we invariably find kindness extended towards us. So, this week, I encourage you to go the extra mile with your service through volunteer work.   Volunteering often peaks during the holidays, leaving many organizations in need during the rest of the year. Consider lending your time, resources, or skills to one such organization. The impact you make will be deeply rewarding for both you and the beneficiaries of your service. If you can involve your team in your volunteer efforts, even better (#SparkGood at #TeamWalmart)! Two cookbooks. Both worn, well-loved, and as familiar as an old friend. These aren't just cookbooks, folks. They're time machines, teleportation devices, and most importantly—storytellers.   They belonged to my Mom, a culinary queen in her own right. The pages are tattered, stained with past feasts, and dog-eared at her favorite recipes. The margins are filled with her sage advice - "double the garlic" or "swap butter for unicorn tears" (okay, maybe not that last one). But these cookbooks hold more than just notes and recipes. Each page is a story of a time, a place, a feeling. The chocolate cake recipe? That's not just dessert, it's the tale of my 10th birthday party—laughter, balloons, and frosting-smeared faces. The Christmas cookie recipe? It doubles as a comedy about the year we used salt instead of sugar. These cookbooks, like a good pair of jeans, are well-worn and well-loved. They transform everyday ingredients into extraordinary memories. They turn the act of eating into an event, a moment, a story.     In the world of nonprofits, we too have our 'cookbooks'—our causes, our missions, our work. They may be tattered and stained with challenges and triumphs, but they are filled with stories. Stories that humanize, that connect, that inspire.   So, here's to finding our stories, to sharing them, and to making a difference—one 'recipe' at a time. Because in the end, it's not about what we do, it's about the stories we tell.
