I heard Albertsons Companies Foundation is celebrating its 10th anniversary and thought I'd share: This summer will mark 6 years that I have been stocking the lobby at West Contra Costa Detention Center with free books for children and youth who are visiting a loved one. And it started with a Nourishing Neighbors grant in 2018 (for the CA Summer Meal Coalition) to promote summer meals and all the fun activities at the library. Here it is six years later -and tens of thousands of books and food resources later-and still going strong. I do this now as a volunteer since my career has changed, with donated books from friends and strangers (and sometimes the library) and continued partnership with Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office. My goal has always been to make a pretty drab and sad place look like coolest and free-est version of Barnes & Noble possible and I think this weekend's re-stock looks pretty good. Thank you Christy Duncan Anderson & Albertsons Companies Foundation (and of course, Food Research & Action Center) for seeing the importance of simultaneously nourishing children's minds and bodies. 🧡 Keep on nourishing neighbors and happy anniversary.
