Gratitude is such an important practice to keep us grounded in this crazy world. I tend to express gratitude in my personal life, but I'm recognizing the importance of extending this practice to my professional life. It’s easy in work (and life) to feel like we aren’t doing enough. Society is constantly telling us we need more, and that we should be doing more and chasing this can easily lead to burnout. There is so much research to show that cultivating a culture of gratitude at work can improve happiness, reduce stress, increase trust and motivate employees. Try this exercise in your team meetings: 1. Ask your team to name one thing they are grateful for at work. Serves as a motivating reminder of what they love about their job 💜 2. Today and every day, I am thankful for my health, family and friends, colleagues, nature, and being able to pursue a career that drives me and that I am passionate about. I also wanted to share a lovely read I found from Korn Ferry CEO Gary Burnison titled, "For This We Are Grateful" (https://lnkd.in/gwnikTB2). Gary's story hit home with me as I see the need in the world all around us, and I am looking every day to see what I can do better to help serve those needs. It doesn't have to be a "big thing," it can simply be how you interact with others. Gary's "gratitude list" is inspiring and one that I personally resonate deeply with, because it is a list that we can all be grateful for and emulate. Cash and Compliments. Let me take you back to a holiday season at Men's Health Magazine, early in my career. My C-Suite bosses did something unforgettable: they gave me flowers and cash, but the real gift was the touch of generosity I felt. On some days, I thought my work would go unnoticed, but their simple message of appreciation for my hard work changed that. It wasn’t just about the money; it was the recognition that stayed with me. Years later, as a boss at Daily Mail, I remembered that holiday feeling. I had an assistant, a true rockstar, destined for greatness. During the holidays, I decided to pay it forward. I gave her a generous sum of cash, but more importantly, I showered her with compliments. I acknowledged her immense contribution to our successful year. The gratitude in her eyes? It said it all. That gesture of appreciation didn’t just make her day; it cemented one of the most rewarding working relationships in my career. This story isn't just about holiday gifts; it’s about the lasting impact of recognition. The effects of those gifts of cash and compliments have lasted decades in my career, and I often give back when I can. I chose to give a generous 2-month notice instead of the standard 1, thinking it would be a smooth transition. Every night before dinner, my daughter and I say what we are grateful for in life. It helps us focus on something wonderful as we wrap up another day on this planet. Some days are tougher to say what we are grateful for, because bad days happen. We say it anyway, and whether we want to feel better or not, it ultimately helps. I wonder what the work place would be like if we said out loud what we are grateful for in our jobs and careers, while at work. Negativity cultures like spit on a Petri dish. Without intention, and without loving-kindness, we preserve that Petri dish, and allow the negativity to spread. It’s not long before a work place has been plagued with negativity, and becomes toxic. If you read this today, I hope you take a moment to practice gratitude in the work place. Breathe life into what you appreciate about your work. If you struggle to practice this, it may be a sign you are not doing work that is fulfilling you. Gratitude can also bring change, and it’s ok to change. Sometimes we go to grow as well. While working in a role that requires you to think a lot and wear multiple hats. It is important that you define your work values. It is important to reconsider saying Yes when you oppose to something. Your idea might not be understood that easily or by many, but it might actually be solving a problem that no one else thought of. It is important to always remember that you are unique. It's your uniqueness that will lead you towards more alignment. Its important to have your secure window at least once a day during your work hour so that you can align everything in your mind. So that you can ponder mindfully on the things in your plate, so that you can celebrate the little wins and be more grateful because that will give you power and confidence to solve anything and everything.
