This AI representation can converse with museum-goers, drawing from Van Gogh's own words. The AI often addresses queries about Van Gogh's death, a topic handled with care, steering responses towards themes of resilience. The creation of this AI doppelgänger was a thoughtful process, taking nearly a year of deliberation, according to Agnès Abastado, the museum's head of digital development. The project aimed to strike a balance between being culturally insightful and avoiding commercialization. While some art historians have expressed concern over Van Gogh's portrayal in popular culture, others acknowledge the appeal this AI has to a broader audience. The challenge of balancing historical integrity with public interest, especially among gamers, remains. Despite these debates, the museum is committed to continuing with the AI project, recognizing its popularity among visitors.
