Once again, I ask the same question(s). All evidence and research to this point have 1) clearly demonstrated that modern vehicles (both ICE and EV) present greater fire risk than in the past. 2) shown that active Fire suppression is the best front line defense and can control such fires (again both ICE and EV). Yet the arguments here and elsewhere around increased fire resistance would have helped or that EVs are potentially to blame is all 2nd hand rubbish. Require and maintain active Fire suppression in car parks and this is page 2 news story at best.

Electric vehicles (EVs) pose a unique challenge in the event of a fire. Lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in EVs, are highly flammable and can cause a fire that is difficult to extinguish. In fact, lithium-ion battery fires are almost impossible to put out. The fire can be complex and often heralded by a highly toxic vapour cloud accompanied by a hissing noise and highly directional jets, followed, possibly, by an explosion. Firefighters generally use immense quantities of water to cool the battery pack (although this won’t prevent fire erupting again), a fire blanket to suppress the flames and breathing equipment for the fire fighters to protect them from the toxic vapour cloud. Either that or simply let the blaze burn itself out. Attempting to suffocate the fire with inert gases is ineffective because, being a chemical blaze, it does not require oxygen. After containment, the burnt-out EV must be removed and deposited in a compound away from buildings and other vehicles. More radical steps include immersing the car in water, although not sea water because chlorine gas can be released. EV fires are rare and occur at a rate of about one per 20 million miles driven, compared with one fire per 19 million miles driven for gasoline vehicles. However, as more electric cars take to roads, attention is turning to their safety, in particular fire safety. This affects insurance costs.

Just another reminder that we often build structures to far outlast what goes in them (people, autos, furnishings, consumer goods) and rarely if ever do we go back and reassess the design for the changing hazard. Even when designing a new structure the “rules” often may be antiquated and at best are likely based on research that is already a decade old due to the nature of consensus standards. Mark your calendar and see how long substantive changes take to make their way into everyday codes and standards. Performance based design isn’t “THE” answer but some level of performance based design and system revalidation might make sense, in particular for areas with known changes in the hazards. If the structure can’t handle the revised hazard, then administrative controls or additional mitigation measures may be needed.

And the big question is: Did the car park burn down from an electric vehicle battery fire? Not against EV's, just want to see a country regulatory commisions impose some type of effective design safety measures that will prevent or isolate EV battery fires in Trucks, Cars, Motorcycles. The answer is yes, they found the fire started with a parked EV. #EV #safetyengineers #electricvehicles

Are electric vehicles really safe and environmentally friendly? Why are the facts hidden so that the risks and damages caused by electric vehicles do not cause a reaction in society, and the electric vehicle trend, which was initiated with the public perception that it is safe and environmentally friendly, is not damaged? A single electric vehicle that burns itself while parked causes fire crews to be harmed, a parking lot burns down with all the vehicles, incredible environmental pollution, and hundreds of tons of water wasted. Why is the media in this blackout? What if this fire had been in the parking lot underneath a shopping mall or business center? Can you imagine the spectacle or chaos that would ensue?

It is imperative to have a plan for large fires in underground and above ground parking spaces from the addition of EV and lithium -ion fires, to tactical fire suppression and ventilation for dealing with challenges like this. The use of large diameter hoses, fire suppression tactics and a better understanding of building suppression and protection systems is paramount in these situations.🔥🙏

The combustible materials and fire load of modern vehicles is becoming ever more challenging to manage. As we've seen with the devastation caused by the Luton Airport car park fire on 10th October, fires in modern vehicles is challenging. We need to think again and do more to protect these environments with better fire safety measures. Unfortunately, it remains glaring that current regulatory guidance for car parks still does not call for the installation of sprinklers. This building was built in accordance with local code, fully compliant. An investment of 20 million pounds. A fraction of that investment extra to install sprinklers could have prevented the 'significant structural collapse', and the deployment of 15 fire engines, more than 100 firefighters, and the 1,500 vehicles lost in the blaze. Let alone the risk of the fire spreading to surrounding buildings. Compliance is important to conduct business, building resilient is what keeps you in business.

Fire and explosion at the Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg yesterday. One person missing and 22 persons injured. This falls into an ever growing category of 'fires in the construction phase' - clearly fire safety arrangements, including precautions with respect to hot work, must be taken care of also in this phase, which requires solid planning, as some of the eventual 'in-use' fire safety measures are not in place yet. All multi-storey car parks should have sprinklers. They are always a difficult retrofit (normally due to headroom) but there are means and ways. At the very least all new build multi-storey car parks should have sprinklers and the design needs thinking about in the early stages to plan steel penetrations (to avoid loss of clear headroom) and room for pumps and tank. #carparks #multistorey #fire #firesprinklers #BAFSA

BAFSA statement on Luton Airport car park fire The devastating Luton Airport carpark terminal fire is a "regrettable reminder of why BAFSA continues to call for sprinklers to be fitted in all modern, multi-storey carparks," BAFSA's chief executive, Ali Perry has said. "Almost all modern cars are significantly larger, more massive and contain much greater amounts of plastic than ever before. They produce fires which are larger and propagate much faster than was previously possible. When electric vehicles catch fire, for example, they can produce intense horizontal flames that may ignite adjacent vehicles and create large conflagrations that can eventually result in structural failure and collapse of the building concerned, putting firefighters at risk and making it difficult to control the fire." he added. Current guidance on fire precautions in the construction of car parks listed in Approved Document B of the Building Regulations for England and Wales (ADB) and Scottish Technical Standards do not currently require that sprinklers be installed. "It is BAFSA's opinion, that this advice does not fully take into account the greater fire load of modern vehicles." added Perry. "This is why BASFA is again calling for automatic fire sprinkler systems to be fitted in all multi-storey car parks." #sprinklers #firesafety #lutonairportfire
