Communities nationwide are experimenting with tiny homes to house populations who struggle with stable housing. As in Syracuse, the idea is often met with community resistance, but for cities that can overcome opposition, some efforts to date seem promising.    A Syracuse University Maxwell School survey found that A Tiny Home for Good saves Onondaga County $117,694 per tenant per year, for example, from decreased use of social and emergency services, food programs, overnight shelters and jails. The other, less measurable benefit the survey highlights is the redevelopment of vacant lots and derelict homes throughout Syracuse, improving aesthetics and reducing crime.   I can add a bit more colour around the above: a)More needs to be done in terms of urban planning. Vacant land and buildings need to be re-zone as part of providing affordable housing solutions. b) Both urban and rural planners need to adopt sustainable building practices as part of providing affordable housing. c) Economic development needs to be push outside major metropolitan areas to mid-size to small urban areas. d) Changing building codes that will include the embodied of CO2 in terms of their structures as well as adoption of modular and 3-D construction options. e) Banks need to revisit their house appraisal process as part of reducing the ridiculous bids and asks.   Here is my work on housing: https://lnkd.in/g97DJRNc or Blog – Sector – Construction – Building Codes – Building and embodied Emissions - State of California - https://lnkd.in/gMCzSDTJ or https://lnkd.in/gbgbakfg or https://lnkd.in/gXgVJSXb #affordablehousing #tidyhomes #3D #modular #greenhousing #zoning #urbanplanning #ruralplanning #greenbelt #arableland #sustainablehousing City of Syracuse City of Kansas City, MO
