Last night was a heartbreaking end to an incredible run by the Georgia Bulldogs. Hats off to a gritty Alabama team that keeps finding ways to win. Regardless of last night’s results, Georgia is a great football team because it knows success isn't solely defined by streaks or setbacks. When asked about the Bulldog’s historic winning streak after they beat Tennessee earlier in the season, coach Kirby Smart responded, “I’m focused on Georgia Tech.” Like Kirby and the Bulldogs, real success is about staying focused on the next step and emphasizing one game at a time. I grapple with the same emotions in my own life: the elation of wins and the apprehension after losses. Yet, sustained success is about embracing setbacks, learning, and emerging stronger. In both football and life, it's crucial not to dwell on past victories or succumb to naysayers. Instead, give your best in each moment, each opportunity. In 2003, during the NFL draft, I waited to hear my name called—a moment that never came. Yet, that day marked the beginning of a nine-year professional football career that defined a part of my identity and laid the foundation for everything that followed. For many, the draft is just the starting line of a long professional road. Not getting drafted didn't end my journey; it reignited my love for the game and spurred me to seize every opportunity that came my way. Not only did he prove himself as a player on and off the field, but he carries himself in a way that most aspire to be. When I was 7 years old, I was randomly selected at an Arizona Diamondbacks game to compete in the Hot Dog race on the jumbotron in front of 43,000 fans. It was me (Relish) vs two other kids - ketchup and mustard. That night was one of the most memorable nights of my life and I became a lifetime Dbacks fan. 1 year later, they won the World Series and I vividly remember my dad, brothers and I jumping up and down in our house when Gonzo had the iconic walk-off hit to send the Yankees home. Fast forward a few decades and here is a picture of me with the CEO of the Dbacks, Derrick Hall, and my good friend Joseph P. Walsh, MBA (VP of HR) right after they had become Nectar customers. Meeting Derrick the first time was surreal. I told him the Hot Dog race story and he sent me the latest "Relish" shirt since I couldn't find my old one. ------------------------------ Last night, the dream of winning another World Series was postponed, but many people are in disbelief that this young team made it to the playoffs at all, let alone to the World Series. How did a super young team with one of the smallest budgets in the league get past the juggernaut Dodgers and Phillies? From what I've witnessed, it's the culture they've built. Derrick and the leadership team are some of the most kind, humble and amazing people I've ever met and they have a big vision that everyone is bought into. They have 5 core values that spell BUILD. - Belonging - Unified - Integrity - Longevity - Development Most companies have core values, but few actually LIVE and BREATHE them like the Diamondbacks organization does. It's been amazing to work with them and learn how a world class organization approaches its culture. Yesterday wasn't the outcome we wanted, but what an amazing year of defying the odds! I know the day will come when the confetti falls again in Chase Field, just not yet.
