Another piece of evidence that the value capture from ai will not be financial. These guys are building employee replacements to basically handle all B2B work. So let's game this out. If B2B employees go out of work and most work will be done by Artisans, then who will buy B2C products? The current spending power of the nation will go flaccid. This will cause distressed brands to fail and we will be left with a bunch of invested money and no way to exit it. Plus a bunch of AI bots with nothing to work on. The current financial paradigm does not work in the age of AI. another curiosity to keep an eye out for is how little investment is needed for an AI "shovel provider" to become successful. Compare that to what further research into AGI will cost. So what will we achieve first? AGI or a flaccid economy?

Starting a market data company in a competitive industry has been extremely tough. We faced huge barriers-to-entry, with upfront engineering and colocation expenses in the millions. As a later player in this industry, I can see why many founders took shortcuts in the past: "Just re-sell data from Bloomberg or Refinitiv. Don't worry about data quality. Focus on the marketing and branding instead." We took the opposite approach at Databento. We hired 30 engineers before hiring our first marketer. We put our budget into data quality, API, and user experience, with a bet that customers care more about quality than the name brand of the company. After all, if you bake a cake with rotten ingredients, you’re not gonna build a masterpiece, no matter how fancy the packaging looks.   Today, we celebrate a small milestone in a long journey. When startups say they’ve launched faster with Databento, when hedge funds say they’ve had a record year relying on our data, when back office teams can finally access data without sharing a password, it makes what we do - all of the pains and risks of doing a startup - worth it. 

I'm launching my startup!! This Thursday I will be presenting my new Dragin software in front of 5,500 people. Yeah, we'll have an open booth for a few hours, but I'm really excited about the demonstration on stage. I love public speaking; and now is my time to prove it. What it took to get here: 1. Thousands of lines of code 2. Building an entire database structure from scratch 3. Hiring better developers than me who looked at my code base and said: "nope". The proceeded to refactor the entire thing. 4. We are now a team of 8. Looking to grow! 5. Seven potential customers booked time slots already; after this conference I expect to be slammed. What's next: We have one marketing analyst and seven developers. I'm sales, design, infrastructure, and HR. Next steps is to hire a proper sales team!! It's wild that this all transpired in just under two years. I'm SUPER STOKED!!! Wish me success!
