I was on a panel a few of months ago and we were asked by a young boy what advice could we give him as an aspiring farmer. My advice? 🌾Ask as many questions as you can; it’s our responsibility to answer them for you. If we don’t know the answer, we will help you find someone that does. 🌾Don’t be afraid to tell us what you want; So long as it’s done respectfully and for the right reasons, why shouldn’t you tell us how you would like to farm. 🌾Look after yourself; Nothing is more important than you. If you are not mentally and physically productive your business won’t be. 🌾Travel! See what the rest of Oz, even the world, has to offer you. If farming is your passion you will come back to it. The experiences you gain from seeing what is out there doesn’t have to change your career plan, but it can certainly make it richer. 🌾Know the difference between working IN your business and ON your business: Being out with your boots in this dirt is important, but so is understanding that time in the office, building up leadership skills, and attending workshops can go a long way to a healthy and sustainable farming business. 🌾Nobody should know your business better than you, but that doesn’t mean you need to be doing everything: Set up systems and procedures so that you can take time off, or you can attend to something last minute and it will be safe in the hands of someone else for a while. 🌾Have conversations with your family about what succession planning looks like: Tough conversations to have. You may think you are too young, but there are ways to be part of the conversation NOW so you know what is expected, and they know too. 🌾Learn a trade, or anything that can either complement your farming business, or act as a safety net IF things don’t work out or you need some extra income now and then. 🌾Enjoy farming, love farming, stay connected to farming. But know that there are hard, overwhelming, frustrating, and scary times. That’s ok. It doesn’t mean you need a career change, it means you need to learn how to manage those times and be ok with both sides of the coin 💙 Did I miss anything?

Everyone should work on a farm at some point, especially entrepreneurs. 5 lessons from the farm👇🏻 1. Farmers prioritize their tasks They have an endless task list, but if they don't complete the most important ones at the right time, they don't reap a harvest at the end of the season. 2. Farmers are extremely eclectic They are jack of all trades - from agronomist , to mechanic, to accountant, to sales - all before lunch. 3. Farmers act in the present, but think long-term For them, having a long-term plan and vision is a necessity to their success, not luxury. 4. Farmers follow through when they don't want to They have to show up every single day, no matter the weather or circumstance. 5. Farmers realize that there is a season for everything They know there is proper time for every task and they can't rush the seasons. Right now, around 2% of the population is involved with agriculture in the United States. Not to mention that the average person is spending 90% of their waking hours indoors. Maybe it’s time considering a new career! Imagine you are a farmer with a bountiful crop to harvest, but you have limited time and resources. How do you decide which crops to focus on? Do you spend an equal amount of time on each crop, or do you prioritize the ones that yield fast and provide the most significant returns? What is this called: This phenomenon is widely known as the 80/20 principle or Pareto Principle. Why it Matters: The Pareto Principle states that roughly 80 percent of work results — or output — are produced by 20 percent of the work effort, or input. It should be noted, however, that the 80/20 principle is a simplification, and in reality, the ratio tends to differ — for example, it could be 70/30 or 99.9/0.01. When it comes to the farmer's crops, 80% of the harvesting comes from the 20% of the crops. So, it makes sense for the farmer to prioritize those crops that yield significantly more returns. This principle can be applied to your personal day-to-day activities and your business as well.
