Pavement construction involves more than just the surface layer; a strong foundation is crucial. So how can aggregate materials create a strong pavement foundation? Aggregate materials can be used as an unbound base and as embankment layers in pavement structures. These layers sit directly on the subgrade (the native soil or fill material that supports the pavement structure) and offer additional support to the entire structure. More information can be found in the graphics below which cover: - How aggregates are used in base layers, including its benefits - Where to source aggregates - Important properties and characteristics to know about aggregates As always, it is important to test the pavement’s resistance to damage. To determine the strength of the base layer, road authorities may choose to commission the Falling Weight Deflectometer as part of the structural evaluation project. This is the best way to identify the warning signs of pavement failure before it becomes visually detectable.
