Cutting cores in asphalt pavement is a critical quality control measure with several important purposes. Marshall mix design is a widely implemented method to determine the optimum asphalt content (OAC) prior to the road construction. Test specimens with different asphalt binder content are prepared. The specimens should then be weighed to ease the calculation for important parameters such as bulk density, voids in total mix (VTM), voids in mineral aggregate (VMA) and voids filled with asphalt (VFA). The specimens are first compacted using Marshall hammer before they are being tested for Marshall stability and flow. The test results and calculated parameters are then plotted against asphalt binder content. From the plots of bulk density, Marshall stability and VTM, we determine individual OAC values based on individual criterion. The value of OAC for the asphalt mix would be the average of these three values. It is important to note that, all parameters should be checked against the limits and criteria set out by relevant authorities for various purposes. Surface Course: - Purpose: Handles traffic loads, provides friction, and prevents water infiltration. - Description: Made of high-quality materials, it's the top layer we drive on. 3. Tack Coat: - Purpose: Bonding between binder course layers. - Description: A light application of asphalt that sets quickly to ensure a strong connection. 4. Binder Course: - Purpose: Distributes load to the base course. - Description: Contains less asphalt, serving as a cost-effective alternative to the surface course. 5. Prime Coat: - Purpose: Bonding and waterproofing. - Description: Low viscous bitumen application that penetrates and seals the layers below. 6. Base Course: - Purpose: Further load distribution and drainage. - Description: Made of crushed stone, slag, or other materials, enhancing the road's structural support. 7. Subbase Course (optional): - Purpose: Structural support, drainage, and fines prevention. - Description: Located beneath the base course, it's optional depending on sub-grade quality. 8. Reinforced Soil Slopes (RSS) provide an economical option when addressing grade differences. Oftentimes, Reinforced Soil Slopes are used in a wide variety of applications by transportation agencies as part of their roadway designs. During new construction, the RSS can be used to reduce fill requirements or meet right-of-way (ROW) limitations without the higher cost of a retaining wall. Highway pavement layers

We always apply Prime coat over the aggregate layers where the Asphaltic wearing coarse or Asphaltic base coarse is being laid depending on the road design. However where there is Asphaltic base coarse being laid first,then tack coat is applied before Wearing coarse.
