Solo-preneurs closing when chains thriving Before I started working on HUE, I had a discussion with my co-founder, who shared a story that had become all too familiar to us. She is vegan and loved a small vegan café run by a solo entrepreneur. However, a few blocks away, a new vegan café chain opened. This chain was excellent at marketing, and slowly, the solo entrepreneur began losing customers, eventually leading to the café's closure. The primary reason a solo entrepreneur shuts down their café or restaurant is the lack of customers. My co-founder herself launched a café, and encountered services like Tabelog, which sell subscriptions with the promise of attracting more customers. Despite subscribing, she never gained a single new customer through them. She baked everything herself, and her products tasted amazing, but it wasn’t enough. Taste is no longer enough. But taste is no longer necessary and standardized… marketing is king 👑 In a few years, when my child is growing up, I hope to still find artisans to visit with them, enjoying unique craftsmanship and authentic flavors, rather than standardized chain food. However, chain restaurants are rapidly increasing, growing at a rate of 13% (up from 11% previously). The lesson learned: Today, our craftsmanship and solo entrepreneurs are in immediate danger. This is why I launched a foodie social network named DOKONI, now rebranded as HUE, A World Where Taste Matters, to give our artisans a chance of success in this tough and highly competitive market. Business ideas are wildly over-rated. And great execution gets no love. It's backwards. Think about it like this. Someone tells you she has a great idea for a business. She wants you to invest $5,000. Here's the pitch: → It's a burger joint → She's gonna develop a quirky brand → It will have a vegan focus with a wacky menu That's it. That's the pitch. She seems smart and she's got some restaurant experience. But the idea is blah. So you pass. Too bad, you could have invested in Pinky Cole, founder of the $100M burger chain Slutty Vegan. ______ Let's be honest. All startups are risky and this concept could have easily failed. But that’s the point. It wasn't about the concept. It was about the execution. I'm sure Slutty Vegan today looks a lot different from Pinky's plan on the back of a napkin 5 years ago. Building your network is like cooking a meal in a crock pot. Not like searing a steak. You put in the right ingredients, and you let it cook. You wait. The "ingredients" to building a network are pretty simple: saying hi to new people, going to events, setting up coffee chats, throwing events, offering your help to people, etc. Most people succeed at these things, they just fail at the "waiting" part. Add those ingredients and let it sit overnight, keep stirring it and adding in the meantime, and in the morning you'll have a delicious stew that is a strong network. #relationships #founder #startup
