Remember folks…. There’s no 2nd Layer if there’s no 1st Layer in place and barely stable. There’s no meaning to Audit what you are not managing. You define and plan your house from top-down… But you build it from down-up. And I’m not talking about civil architecture and engineering.

Yesterday, members of our Civil & Structural engineering team attended the consultation on the proposed Birmingham Local Plan at Cundall, hosted by the British Council for Offices Midlands. There was a good walk through of the draft low carbon policies by the author and how will tackle climate change through the planning process. Nice to see that their policies closely align with our ONE Creative environments (ONE) Carbon Reduction Plan. Interesting to hear challenging technical questions from various consultants in the audience. Topography Sandbox is a dynamic, hands-on tool for planning purposes. How can it be used in AEC? Urban planners can: - model new urban landscapes, observing potential impacts on the existing topography - demonstrate how various landscapes respond to flooding, Civil Engineers may use it to: - Visualize how proposed infrastructure projects will interact with the natural landscape - Evaluate the environmental impact of construction projects I wish I had this in school. How would you construct foundations through that?!! Our paper on Managing piling obstruction risk intelligently for reinvention of a UK brutalist building has now been published, in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) #forensicengineering journal, foundation re-use special edition. Whilst we did re-use foundations, the main success of this project was the innovative and collaborative approach between Arup KELLER McGee and Platform to manage the considerable underground obstruction risk for the additional piles. The foundation strategy was a key component of the building being able to re-use 80% of the existing fabric, and achieving SCORS rating A+ for structural embodied carbon. And the piling was completed on time, and to budget. The paper contains details of obstruction drilling trials and in production, as well as setting out design considerations and the contractual approach. I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS! 🎄 ROADS: Connecting people and places. 🚗 Two names are associated with roads, Edgar Purnell Hooley and John McAdam, both civil engineers who have made our lives so much easier and paved the way for us to explore the world ….. literally. 🛣 JOHN McADAM was a Scottish Civil Engineer who developed the road construction method called MACADAMIZATION. This involved laying small stones in shallow, compact courses to create a hard and durable road service. This laid the foundation for modern road construction by emphasizing the importance of a well-graded and compact roadbed, providing better drainage and using durable materials. 🛣 EDGAR PURNELL HOOLEY was a British Civil Engineer who invented TARMACADAM, commonly known as tarmac. His was a happy accidental discovery when he noticed a smooth road surface was created by spilled tar. He patented the process of mixing crushed stone, sand and tar to create the durable and water-resistant road surface. So, while McAdams contribution focused on foundational principles of road construction, Hooley’s invention of tarmacadam significantly enhanced the durability and weather resistance of road surfaces. Both innovations played pivotal roles in the evolution of road construction methods.
