A recent survey by Hong Leong Islamic Bank [https://lnkd.in/efaQ9eCp] revealed that 65% of Malaysian Muslims exclusively choose Shariah-compliant banking and investment products. This is an indicator of the preference for ethical and faith-based financial services. At UKIFC, we conducted a global survey with around 2,000 participants from four continents, focusing on banking customers' attitudes toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Remarkably, 87% of respondents expressed a willingness to pay more for products aligned with the SDGs. This shift shows that consumers are increasingly considering the broader impact of their financial choices, looking beyond halal compliance to include sustainability and ethical impact. Yesterday was another historic moment in my career as NMB Bank listed the first Foreign Currency Bond at the DSE Tanzania having mobilised USD 73Million in #foreigndirectinvestment amidst challenges in the Global Markets space. NMB Jamii Bond is the first and the largest #sustainability Bond in the country and East Africa Region with a total of TZS 400Billion collected both in Foreign and Local currency. This is the 28th listing in the history of DSE and moves the amount of Corporate Bonds listed from TZS 326Billion to more than double. It is estimated that, the net economic cost of addressing climate change impact in our country is equivalent to 1-2% of GDP per year by 2030. And thus, high #investments and #financing is needed to combat this effect. We have all seen the recent floods in Hanang and its effect but how both Private and Public Sector came together to support. As highlighted in CIIP’s report “Financial Inclusion in Post-COVID Southeast Asia: Accelerating Impact Beyond Access”, 39 million MSMEs in Southeast Asia face a funding gap of up to US$300 billion. There is much to be done to close this gap. CIIP is pleased to have been able to contribute to the completion of Lao PDR’s Priority Economic Deliverable on “Enhancing Policy Dialogue to Address Financing Gaps and Strengthen Financial Inclusion among MSMEs”. This was shared in the Joint Statement of the 11th ASEAN Finance Ministers’ and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting (AFMGM) released on 5 April 2024. CIIP had the honour to facilitate a roundtable discussion earlier this year, together with the ASEAN Working Committee on Financial Inclusion (WC-FINC), and alongside partners such as the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (ACCMSME), and other stakeholders. This and other dialogues have led to the identification of ways and initiatives to narrow financing gaps for #MSMEs, such as harnessing #digitalinfrastructure, improving financial literacy, providing incentives to financial service providers, and strengthening #creditbureaus. We congratulate Lao PDR and WC-FINC on their important work in this area. We look forward to working with partners in the region to help promote financial inclusion and financial literacy among individuals and MSMEs. I am thrilled to share that our Minister of Finance, Mehmet Şimşek, announced that the Turkey Industrial Development Bank (TKYB) has secured approximately $416.7 million in funding for the "Turkey Industrial Emission Reduction Project," including €200 million and $200 million. This significant milestone is part of their fruitful collaboration with the World Bank. As the world moves towards sustainability, the implementation of carbon taxes globally is imminent, emphasizing the need for proactive measures in reducing emissions. Recent Treasury adjustments to listing conditions mark a significant shift in IPO approaches at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). The new regulations require companies seeking NSE listing to show profit once in the last five years, departing from the previous three out of five years stipulation. This change is seen as a response to challenges posed by the extended difficult business environment linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and global central bank interest rate hikes. The rules now offer flexibility for entities aiming to list under the SME Market Segment, allowing listing without profitability if a credible business plan demonstrates future potential. The NSE has faced a seven-year IPO drought, citing stringent listing requirements and high fees as contributors. These adjustments align with the government's plan to privatize 11 state-linked entities valued at over Sh200 billion. Beyond relaxing profitability demands, the new regulations permit all legal entities, including limited liability partnerships, to issue securities, broadening participation. The consolidation of market segments into the Main Investment Market Segment and the SME Market Segment simplifies the listing process. While coinciding with the government's privatization agenda, challenges persist, notably with unprofitable entities like the National Oil Corporation (NOC).
