Today, we encountered a post on Reddit, someone took a picture of a cup full of pennies and had other “Redittors” (visitors/commentors on the website) guess how much was in the cup. The winner that guessed the amount before the deadline (7pm same day) would receive the amount – either the actual pennies or a Venmo of the equivalent. The post received around 23k comments and 13k upvotes at the time of writing. None of the commentors guessed the right amount, or so the poster said. Of course, we have no way of knowing. The poster could always change the answer without anyone being able to verify this. Solutions to such a problem – of cooperation between strangers that do not know or trust each other – is exactly what decentralised technologies enable. If the poster would have used Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs), he could have safeguarded the answer in an immutable trustless manner. Commenters could then have submitted their guesses, to be checked against the answer. If we want to take it to the next level, we could expand the process with a ‘check of humanity’ to prevent automated guesses or multiple entries into the context, all without anyone having to disclose personal information. Global coordination with people, business and entities that do not know or trust each other. Of course, this is a low-stakes example where the process does not necessarily have to be immutable. But sometimes the stakes are not low and the collaboration process does matter, for example when companies try to collaborate across the silo’s of mutual corporate boundaries. When I'm not working on PrivacyEngine, I love solving problems with technology. I always found it difficult to search and organize my LinkedIn saved posts. Its easy enough to save a post on here - but good luck trying to find them again! I'm sure that you've saved 100s of posts, but it amazes me that (a) its hard to find the list of saved posts, and (b) once you find the page, there's no search option.
