Last few weeks have been crazy! I've dedicated myself to diving deep into Mailmodo to comprehend the landscape and create a sustainable revenue growth strategy. And I’m doing it while managing a full-time role and a personal life. My mind-blowing team of humans ARAVINDH P G Sunil Padasala Rhea R. Swati Choudhury Bhargav Roy Yamini Kaushik inside the GrowthX® fam made this journey a whole lot possible. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 ⇒ 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 + 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 👇🏼 𝟭. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 💡 We went on 100+ customer calls to understand the ideal customers, the product’s right to win and the competition landscape. This was the key to how we took every step. The decision framework to pick right revenue model became crystal clear by the end of first week. 𝟮. 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀 ♟️ Once the revenue model was set, we picked two key levers to grow revenue for the product. We had some amazing mentors like Giridhar L V, Abhinav Krishna, Balamurali T R inside the GrowthX community with whom we brainstormed core insights to solving those levers. This then led to defining the macro strategy at a user acquisition, onboarding, retention & monetisation parts of the problem. 𝟯. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 🛠️ Here’s where it got a bit uncomfortable. It was tough to go macro → micro → macro on every lever. But, insight-led solutioning helped - as it defined how we thought of everything from distribution problems (CAC/ Volume/ quality) to product-specific problems (onboarding/ retention/ free → paid conversion). 𝟰. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 → 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 📝 Here’s a clear reflection - ideas are easy, random thoughts and strategy are easier. What’s tough is scoping an insight and making it work on a distribution or product problem. I spent over 20+ hours with my team documenting every single campaign, feature, GTM - on and off the product. This was the most time taking but made our complete plan executable. Our strategy document is already over 𝟯𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 and has pure craft that can be executed. And, we were not alone - over 10 GrowthX®Teams with 10 members each are part of this 3-week sprint and every single one of them are building revenue growth strategies that can convince real teams and carries executable frameworks. This week has been THE BEST EVER 👏👏 Remember that verbal commit I got in my hotel room before the boat party last week? It turned into a signed contract and payment. I started working with them on Monday, and I'm hitting GO on some very cool new systems for them TODAY. I just finished a 3-hour string of calls with another client, where we discussed strategic narrative and sales strategy for his upcoming early access launch. We hit diamonds ⛏️💎 Their strategic narrative is looking awesome. I can't wait to share with all of y'all! And already got some meetings on the books for that launch. I learned all about exactly how Warmly, works, and it blew my mind. Exciting announcements coming soon. Shoutout to my new friend Alan Zhao! I have three other opportunities in my pipeline that could become clients a few months out. And I may have played a role in finding a dear friend an awesome new job! 🤞🤞 I'm super hopeful about that one. She and the company deserve each other. Anyway, I don't have time to write more beyond a quick overview of what I've been up to! I'm heads down and getting sh*t done, and it feels GOOD. So I'll leave you with this: "At the start of our call, he was slumped back in his chair. By the end, he was leaning forward staring at me." - my client, about a call he had last week THAT is what happens when you build a great product and nail your strategic narrative. I haven’t posted here in a little over a year. Last time, I shared the news that I was departing from Tropic – it included a perfectly vague description of what I’d be doing next. In December 2022, I had an idea that maybe I could be working a completely different way. I dedicated a decade to two companies. I got to see a lot. Joining rooms of ~5 people and helping them grow to 250+, watching ARR go from $100 to $25M+, scaling, solving puzzle after puzzle. It was fun and sometimes fulfilling. Sadly I knew something wasn’t right – the gas in my tank was depleting faster than it was getting refilled. It was a good time for change. I didn’t do any massive “design your life” exercise, I didn’t launch a website or start a podcast and I didn’t write down a bunch of goals for the year. I started with one. 30 meetings in the first 30 days of 2023. I ended up with 50. Those 50 meetings led to my first two clients. Both B2B SaaS companies looking for help improving their product, building teams, operationalizing development, setting clear vision and blocking/tackling towards major milestones. It was a perfectly weird blend of product, design, operations and executive work – all in service of more effective growth. Just like that, I was a consultant – and I really liked it. Fast forward 12 months and by the end of 2023 I’d worked with 11 different CEOs – helping point their boat towards a more clear destination and move faster that direction. Today, I joined Ofri Kutzi & Tyler Simpson to speak at the A.Team sales kickoff (lmk if you want an intro -- they're amazing). I shared some of my experience shaping products/teams/strategies that have helped companies ranging from those launching their first product to others with hundreds of employees adopting AI. It hasn’t been a linear journey and I’m not entirely sure where it will take me, but the exposure to different people, pattern matching across teams and helping so many people build is pretty awesome. It's fulfilling, too. So I'm making things a touch more formal. I've started a company -- Golden Valley Strategy -- and I'll be building it out a bit more (maybe even a logo and a website?) in the coming months. Until then, if you have a product/process/strategy puzzle to solve, want to figure out how to actually build better or think your company could grow more effectively – I’m always up for a call or a coffee (I’m in NYC until mid-February, Colorado for most of March and Maryland/Mexico City in April). Max Learmonth jumped in the hot seat yesterday to share his lessons from jumping back "on the tools" after launching Forge earlier this year. The topic? Effective cold outreach sprints. There's loads of advice on prospecting nowadays but here are my top level notes: - Plan like f*ck the night before. 1 hour of dedicated planning will make or break your session. Who? Why? How? - Do the reps. Its less about scripts and fancy openers and more about confidence in your product, your objective and yourself (and you'll get this by simply 'doing'). - Disattach from the outcome. Attach to what you can control. (Your plan. Your delivery. Your effort.) - New Founder? Lead from the front. How can you expect your staff to get stuck in if you aren't? - Remember "why are you here?" There's loads of easier jobs than founding a start-up. - + plenty more... Cheers again, Max. The moment I took this picture, my life changed. Back in January I parted ways with Lokalise with no intention of finding another job. 6 years in sales, needed a break and wanted to spend some of that money I was busting my a’ off for. So there I was - carrying my 🏄🏽♀️ to the beach in Canarias, laughing at this garage sign thinking - this is so liberating, the only way I’d ever change my mind was if a really epic opportunity came my way. My criteria for epic seemed impossible: 👉🏻A bootstrapped company between 1-10M in ARR. Bootstrapping lemlist from 1 to 14M in ARR was the most challenging, exhilirating experience of my work life. I needed that thrill again. 👉🏻 The PMF had to be there. To genuienly believe in the product. To know it’s loved and needed by the customers. 👉🏻 The culture. A team that’s so strong in its core, carefully built, full of trust, transparency and respect, where everyone has each others backs and know we can only win if we work as one. 👉🏻 In office, but not in Belgrade - got tired of my 4 walls after 5 years working remotely. Belgrade started to feel small. 👉🏻 Also, would be nice to live by the sea. 😅 So I set my “Open to work” to Spain and Portugal. And as I was thinking how optimistic that was of me, I got a InMail. Subject line: *Bootstrapped and profitable in Barcelona* What the actual… - Hm. A hyper personalised message from recruiter that’s better than most of sales cold emails I’ve ever seen Wait what… *7M in ARR, bootstrapped, small team, 300K signup users/month…* Suffice to say, I didn’t catch a single wave that day. But it was the day I decided - oh I am dropping everything and am going to work for Happy Scribe no matter what. 3 months later, here we go - bootstrapping to double digits in ARR…AGAIN. It would have never worked. Back in October, Lavie Popack came into the office with a wild idea. He wanted to build a new sales platform that unlocks sales rep’s time to increase impact. The first iteration of the idea is not the beta product that’s live right now. In fact, that version of the idea got 🚫 completely scrapped 🚫. Why? Because there was a helluva lot we had to learn directly from our ICP from then to now. TBH, there’s an endless amount of learning to do. That’s why, when Joshua Bailey 🦕⛵️ introduced us to Josh Norris, who suggested we think outside of the LinkedIn box & take a big risk, we said, “When do we start?” 🏃♂️ 🏃♀️ The big risk? Building in public. Yeah, you read that right. We’ve hired 4 SMEs who are experts in sales tech (and also our ICP) & who care about the problem that Saleboat solves now & in the future. These 4 leaders manage sales reps directly and have signed on to not only use Saleboat with their teams but share their (good, bad, and ugly) feedback on LinkedIn for 3 months. All while we iterate on their feedback in real time. 👀 It’s like a reality show – B2B style. 📣 Shoutout to 📣   Gabrielle “GB” Blackwell Saad Khan Chris Cicconi Jake Wolpert For taking the leap & joining the crew. ⛵ We may not be certain about what the next few months will bring, but we do know that, collectively, we’ll be making 🌊 by building together.
