🐎 Ridely is giving the equestrian community some real horsepower → g.co/play/weareplay
In this #WeArePlay story, meet Ingrid from Uppsala, Sweden. She co-founded Ridely to be a digital training partner for fellow equestrians.
Are we about to witness a mutiny, fins flying, leashes whipped like lassos, blue seas turning to red?
N.B. No surfers were harmed in the making of this post.
When I saw Steph Gilmore (8 times world champ) was also taking a year out, I wondered whether the new format might be to blame.
*based on total speculation: sadly I do not have sources close to these two titans of the WSL*
For non-surf-fanatics, they’ve changed the world tour format. Rather than being a league, wherever everyone gets to surf every event, they’ve changed the final stop on tour…
5th seed surfs against 4th.
The loser gets knocked out.
And the winner surfs 3rd seed.
The loser of that heat gets knocked out.
And the winner surfs 2nd seed.
The loser of THAT heat gets knocked out.
And the winner surfs 1st seed, for the world title.
So hard work to get to top spot might by the penultimate event may be futile.
‘Cause the 5th spot (who HASN’T worked as hard as you) might still swoop in and steal the crown from you.
Alright, there were some years — when they still ran to the old format — when you’d kinda know who was going to win the world title with 4 stops on the tour left to go.
But from an athlete’s perspective, that’s hard work paying off.
Is this format change a half-arsed attempt to reel back in viewers for the final event, who might not have watched the tail end of the season if they knew who was going to win 3 spots before end of season?
Is this format change costing WSL two too many of their most-loved competitors?
Give me the benefit of the doubt here and let’s say my theory is on the money…
…If you were WSL, would you have done the same (to boost viewers for the last event), but run the risk of pissing off two competitions who might just be the most loved AND successful on their respective sides of the draw… which will, in turn, piss off the fans who want to watch them battle it out around the world?…
Awesome! ✨
